10 Years Ago - July 17, 2013 Myron and Muriel Van Gerpen will celebrated their 60th Anniversary July 21st.

Jon and Pam Berndt announce the birth of their son, Barrett Jon born June 2nd.

Avon Swim Team season will come to an end Saturday at the Region meet in O'Neill, Nebraska.

Avon Pirate Football Camp will be held July 24-25 at Avon Football Field.

With BLT season upon us, weekend specials at Avon Locker include Pre-Sliced Bacon for $3.29 lb. Fire up the grill and pick up some fresh brats, plain or jalapeno for $3.49 lb or enjoy some skinless chicken breasts for $2.99 lb.

Where else but in a rural South Dakotatowncanyouseehogsrunning looseonMainStreet?Itwasn't a joke to Ray Johnson, hog farmer living south of Avon, as he forgot to fasten the gate on his horse trailer and lost four hogs on his waytomarketTuesday.Thelastwe noticed Ray with a few volunteers, was still chasing down the 'Main Street Hog' shortly before noon as others directed traffic around the porker.

Marcia Ridgway and Don Mudder announced their engagement and upcoming wedding planned for August 14th in Avon.

Powers Furniture crew Curt Koehn and Mike Petrik installed a new front on one of the several Powers' buildings on Main Street. The building has housed a restaurant and a funeral parlor in earlier years. Owner Kenny Powers has owned the building for some time, whichadjoinsthemainstoreviaan archway. It is used for more floor display space.

Other store front fix-ups are in the wind for this summer, including Ludd and Son, and Kenny's Corner Bar, while Martin's Bar (formerlyStockman's)hasalready started a paint-up job.

35 Years Ago - July 1988

TheJayceeswillholdapinochle tourney Saturday at the Legion Hall.

Ludd and Son will open July 18th.

The Little Girls softball team areundefeatedastheywonagainst Springfield, Wagner and Menno this week. Doing the pitching was Marsha Buchholz with Sarah Knudson catching.

Karen Wittmeier and Larry Johnson were married June 18th in the Baptist Church. They will be living in Watertown.

The Pee Wees lost 9-8 to Menno. Travis Rauch was the leading hitter. They beat Tabor 10-9. Rauch had 2 hits and a home run. Jeff Tolsma did the pitching.

56 Years Ago - July 1967

The Mets played Tabor Thursday andlost11-9inanupset,butgot theirrevengeSundaywithan111-2 win over Tabor. Don Christjans and Ray Johnson both had 3 hits.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hornstra and family of Texas are here visiting relatives.

The Norman Fitch family of California were here visiting family and friends.

Dennis Meiers received a Master Degree in Mathematics at the University of Utah.

TheLutheranChurchheldtheir annualpicnicattheCityPark.The young people later enjoyed a part at the Junior Schaefer home.

Rudolph Berndt had his finger amputated and is doing well.
