Avon Science Fair was held with a great showing. House movers worked in almost knee high mud this past week when Bill and Sandy Pier's new house came in. Senior Spotlight - Brendan Anderson. He enjoys chemistry, baseball and producing music. Senior Spotlight - Kenna Kniffen. She enjoys Sociology, hanging out with friends and family and spending time with her niece, Aubree. Senior Spotlight - Marie Fennema. She enjoys graphic design, reading, coloring and learning Japanese. First place winners of the Science Fair were Reece Loewe, Even Blaha, Tiffany Pelton, Haleigh Tjeerdsma, Jason DeJong, Gage Bares, Ashton Frank, Cassie Voigt and Landon Pudwill. Lady Pirates cruise to an easy win defeating Colome 56- 31. They will next play Burke/ South Central in District Championship.

Senior Spotlight: F.J. Konfrst - he enjoys pizza, racing and his motorcycle. Avon's Pep Band has 50 members and played for the DWU and Huron College Game at the Corn Palace. They are directed by Cheryl Jackson. Cindy Frank won the local Argus Leader Spelling Contest. She will compete next at the State Contest in Sioux Falls. Funeral services were held for Lena Weidenbach at Trinity Pres. Church.

Lawrence Jacobs was named County Highway Superintendent effective March 1st. Mrs. Andy Van Asperen hosted the Flower Club. Roll Call was Valentine poems. Campaigning for Student Council positions at Southern State College are: G Ewing, Mary Miller, and Dave Lorenz. Bowling scores: Mike Kotab 194, Carol Powers 191, and high series Lyle Mensch 526. Senior Spotlight: Bob Oorlog - called "Avon's Sports Encyclopedia" and he likes basketball.
85 Years Ago - 1941
Mary Pier was one of 19 students listed on the Honors List at Yankton College. Mrs. William Hento has a 4 foot orange tree and it now has 12 lovely oranges on it. Any visitor is welcome to see it. Avon Library has a new shipment of books from the State Library in Pierre. Members of the Wesleyan Methodist Church had a farewell for Carl and Warren Bangert who volunteered for the Army and will leave Wednesday.
109 Years Ago - 1917
Avon is out of hard coal but train cars are due to arrive soon. Reports come from New Orleans that Dr. and Mrs. Greenfield and Miss Campbell are enjoying a temp of 80 degrees. A meeting was held and Avon will have a summer band. James Kirk is President and Robert Griffith the secretary/treasurer. A boy and girl were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dave Okkinga February 13th. Dr. Alex Hubner and Miss Rosa Schmidt were married February 15 at the bride's home.
