Temperatures dropped well below zero and wind chills were in the minus 20's and 30's this past Sunday. Shirley Yonkers is celebrating her 80th birthday. Avon Fire Department hosted a certification course for members of the Avon and Wagner Fire Departments. Lady Pirates are off to six straight wins, with the boys earning their first win of the season beating Mitchell Christian.

Fire destroyed the trailer home of Patsy Ridgeway and her son, Wade. The Avon Jaycees met at Dutch’s Corner. Reports were given on the New Year’s Dance and the Hot Shot Competition. The Avon boys lost 2 games this week to Parkston and Corsica. The Avon 6th grade girls won the Tri-State BB Tourney in Sioux Falls. They beat Mr. Vernon, Elk Point and Stickney.

Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lyngstad have a new baby girl, Maia, born Jan. 8th. Sandy’s Furniture will be closed on Saturday nights until further Notice. JOLLY ROGER—God’s Volunteers gave a concert at the school.

A new 4-H Club has been started north of Avon with Ella Deurmier and Martha Boese as leaders. They will start with Meal Planning. The Speech and Debate classes took the top debaters to Tyndall. They were Gladys Arneson, Douglas Steckler Wm. Sieling, Beverly Giedd, and Betty Holleman. A freezing drizzle iced up the sidewalks today. Mawhinney School News— Clayton Wittmeier, reporter At our YCL Meeting we elected new officers—Pres. Vert Voigt, VP-Chester Johnson. Vert Voigt and James Knoll have been riding ponies to school.

An overstocked sale is going on at the Avon Mercantile Co. Little Paula Hicks just one year old died from pneumonia. The Trumbo School was on fire from the hot air furnace. The building was saved with the help from C. Ritter and Wm. Muller. Joe Hebner has a new Ford.
