10 Years Ago 2015 After 100 years of worship, the Trinity Presbyterian Church was demolished. An auction had been held with no bidders. Lauren Sees and Eryn Schryvers were named Junior High and High School students of the month. Bachelorette of the month was Kenna Danae Kniffen who described qualities that she looks for in a guy as a cute smile, nice personality and a great sense of humor. While bachelor of the month, John Bernard Kopp liked a girl that was shorter than he, blonde and not shy. Boys’ basketball players of the week were Logan Mudder, Dylan Raysby, Devin Tolsma, Kole Beeson and Brady Cameron. Girls’ basketball players of the week were Heidi Cap, Amanda Reiff, Jill Bertus and Kacie Mudder. 35 Years Ago 1990 Seven-year-old Dennis Powers, after suffering over three years of chemotherapy for acute leukemia was declared “cancer free”. He was treated at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Louie Dykstra was honored for 35 years of service in the Avon Fire Department. Superior winners in the Region I vocal music contest were: Audra Burma, Angela Burma, Christy Voigt, Teri Rauch, Wanda DeJong, Krissy Mensch, Ross Romkema and Chad Hayward. 56 Years Ago 1969 Wheels and tires were stolen from Marvin Mudder’s auto on Friday night, but Sheriff Joe Maruska recovered them in Springfield. Three young men were arrested. The weekly Chamber of Commerce drawings were cancelled due to the poor weather. Men’s hair cut prices raised from $1.30 to $1.50 at all three Avon Barber Shops. Sandy’s Furniture Specials – glass door mirrors - $11.95; sofa and chair – $169.95; full mattress and box spring - $74. Julie Harmacek was honored on her 4th birthday. 85 Years Ago 1940 Sidney Hebner left his car running in front of the library in Tyndall while he was returning some books. When he came out, his car was gone. It was a 1937 V8 Ford. Mr. and Mrs. William Jonkers and baby moved into the D. Griffith home vacated by the Glen Colby family. Nova Lite – Avon students participated in the Tripp Speech Jamboree. Duane Reaney received 1st in radio speaking, Roland Walkes was 3rd, Evelyn Arneson competed in poetry. The Home Economics Class studied breakfast beverages and quick breads. German class began with the study of “Dan Abachied”. 109 Years Ago 1916 The Great Piano Contest ends on March 8th. Dr. Hollingsworth, Greenfield and Berry were called into consultation by the serious illness of Mrs. F.L. Smith. Ducks and geese were migrating to the north in large flocks. The Masquerade Ball was the last dance of the season given by the leap year girls. W.W. Van Gerpen, who had a successful farm sale, moved to town and was living with his mother for now.
