110 Years Ago - July 1912
Rudolph Berndt is here from Eagle Butte.
The Baptist Church Picnic will be held Wednesday at W.R. Van Gerpen's grove.
Ephraim Berndt has purchased the Opera House. The top story is used for programs and the bottom is divided in to the Claussen Butcher Shop and Dr. Dott, the dentist.
It was an ideal day for the 4th of July celebration. At 10:00 the parade passed down Main Street. The patriotic program was at 11. After dinner, the band marched to the ball park where Tripp and Avon played ball. Avon won 4-13. Street sports were then held on Main Street. The biscuit eating contest was the laughable event of the day. The day ended with a band concert and fireworks.
86 Years Ago - July 1936
Henry Weddell and family of Pierre were here visiting and reported that the grasshoppers are eating the leaves off the trees in Pierre.
Rev and Mrs. Milton Strong have once again been called to the pastorate of the First Presbyterian Church.
Some of the prize winners July 4th were: Shetland pony race 1st - Gail Meyer; 2nd - Jim Muller; Men's 100 yard Race, 1st - Durine Voas; 2nd - Chester Fathke; Fat Man's Race, 1st - Dick Mudder; Girl's Race, age 10-12, Ruth Fathke.

Horse racing, barrel racing and other horse events will be held Sunday, just east of Avon. For more information see Don Sternhagen.
Joyce Finck received first prize in the WCTU Essay contest.
The Legion baseball team won 2-1 over Tabor.
987 admissions were recorded at the Avon Swimming Pool during the month of June.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ridgway of MacIntosh spent the week at the Roger Ridgway home.
Jack Thesenga and family of Minneapolis, Neil Hornstras, Les Thesengas and the Fred Mullers had a picnic at Ft. Randall and attended the rodeo in Fairfax.
Ten friends of the John Engel's had a steak dinner on July 4th.
35 Years Ago - July 1987
The Avon HS Classes of 1950- 1959 enjoyed a 50's reunion on July 3-4, 172 attended the banquet. Alvin Mudder was the MC for the program. A dance concluded the evening. A brunch was served the next day at the school.
The Clubhouse Maniacs Slow pitch team won First Place at the tourney in Yankton. Brad Poppe pitched all the games. Jay Weber had 6 home-runs throughout the tourney, coached by Dan Sternhagen. They beat Beresford, Hastings of Yankton, Sioux City and Livestock Bank of Mitchell.
Elsi Weber had a Real Estate and Household Auction on July 8th.
Ronda Van Gerpen was honored at a Bridal Shower in Springfield.
Karla Ridgway was honored at a bridal shower in Helen Pier's back yard.
Elmer and Hattie Pudwill celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with an Open House.
Barbara Dykstra was honored at a bridal shower at the Trinity Presbyterian Church.
