DO-OVER, PLEASE
“I recently retired and applied for early Social Security. But, I don’t so much like retirement and have since gone back to work. Does the Social Security allow people to change their mind?”
As a matter of fact, some taxpayers get a do-over. If Social Security benefits started less than 12 months ago and the taxpayer changes his mind about when they should start, he may be able to withdraw his Social Security claim and re-apply at a future date. A request for withdrawal of an application is made on Form SSA-521.
If the request is approved, all of the benefits received by the worker must be repaid – like the early draw never happened. Occasionally, it’s great to know that you get a do-over.
