DEB & NYLA'S HAIR STYLING

AVON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE P ROFILE:
By
Alyssa Mathis
Deb & Nyla’s Hair Styling has been a part of the Avon Chamber of Commerce for over 45 years. Owners, Deb Voigt and Nyla Raysby, have been in operation 48 and 45 years respectively in the salon industry in Avon. They are both born and raised in Avon with no plans to leave. Deb became interested in hair styling when a friend’s sister went to beauty school, though her mom told Deb that even at a young age she was cutting and styling her doll’s hair. Deb attended the one-year beauty school program at Stewarts in Sioux Falls. Nyla became interested in hair styling after watching her babysitter’s parents rat out her hair in the 1970s and she liked to practice cutting her sister’s hair. Nyla attended Nettleton College in Sioux Falls because they offered dorms. They originally joined the Avon Chamber of Commerce because at that time in Avon, it was expected of businesses. The Avon Chamber of Commerce was very active in the community. It was a great way to support other Avon businesses and get Avon businesses active in the community and surrounding communities. Once a month both Deb and Nyla each give a day of their time to go the nursing home and assisted living facilities in Tyndall and Springfield, giving those residents a beauty shop experience from the comfort and safety of their homes. Both ladies are very active in the Avon community. They are both active members of the Avon Chamber of Commerce and support community and school functions and fundraisers including Avon Student of the Month, the circus, post prom, Hosea, Parade of Lights, the annual Easter Egg Hunt, the Pink Ladies and the junior class of Avon. They donate to any child that comes through their doors selling or raising money for various activities. Their business is important to the Avon community. Not only do they provide services for people that cannot or do not like to leave town, but it is a welcoming place of community, where a person feels like family. Being in a small community where everyone knows everyone, and an overwhelming majority of people care about one another is important to the ladies. Deb and Nyla become very close to their customers. The ladies are very accommodating with their schedules. Open Monday through Friday from seven a.m. until whenever a customer needs an appointment. They are very flexible, understanding that families with working parents and children may need appointment times beyond the normal nine to five. The customers are what Deb and Nyla enjoy the most about having their business in Avon. They are very thankful for their customers. Avon offers an interesting variety of customers that require a variety of services that keep their job fun and interesting. The salon always has new products from shampoo and styling products to jewelry. Though since covid some items may be more limited. They provide men’s, women’s and kids haircuts, perms, waxing, colors, etc. and even different types of ear piercings. These ladies understand the needs of their community and if asked will go beyond what normal stylists would. If called, they will help do funeral hair for customers that have passed. They also will help those going through breast cancer shave their head for no charge and help customers find wigs during those stages of treatment if they are interested. Thank you, Deb and Nyla, for providing services to Avon and giving the community a special place to come to where people are treated like family. Congratulations on your almost 50 years in the Avon community and hoping for many more years to come.
