A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PRINCIPAL

By
Kindra Mixon

Lindsey Fathke became the new K-12 principal this year at Avon School District. Lindsey started at Avon as a sixth grade teacher, and continued for four years. Before Avon she taught at Bon Homme for eight years. When asked about her morning routineasaprincipal, sheresponded saying, “When I get to school in the morning I load up my computer, check my emails, my phone messages, check my planner, and make a small to-do list for the day.” Lindsey imagines a day at work as making a list of what she may need to do and/or anything that gets brought to her attention. She likes to walk through the hallways and bops through classrooms throughout the day.

Lindsey’s biggest challenge of being a principal is figuring out her new job and what needs to be done; figuring out the little things that need to be done and responsibilities. Transitioning from a classroom, from teaching subjects to now making her own schedule has been a real challenge for her. She had to learn to reprogram her brain. When asked how she motivates kids to follow rules, she responded by saying, “when kids know what is expected from them, they will meet and follow them.Theyknowtheywillbeheld accountable for their actions.” Lindseywantedtobecomeaprincipal because she always felt like she could be doing more. She also stated that, “it’s a way to help and reachmorestudents, andwanted to help teachers by giving them pro-tips and tools on how to be more successful. She says that's something she couldn't do in her ownclassroom.”Onelastfunfact about Lindsey, is that she used to walk the Avon halls as a student, now she gets to be the principal! She loves her job so far, and she loves seeing and working with the students.
