COURTNEY SEES THREE-PEATS STATE LONG JUMP TITLE

By

The Class B State Track Meet was held from Thursday, May 23rd through Saturday, May 25th in Sioux Falls at the Howard Wood Field. This was the 119th year that this annual 3-day event was held. Seventeen athletes from the Avon School District qualified for the Class B State Track Meet. Of the seventeen that qualified, one athlete brought home a state title. Courtney Sees for the third time won the Class B Long Jump State title. Courtney is the daughter of Joe and Janelle Sees. She first became interested in long jump because her sister, Lauren had participated in the event when she was in high school. Sees achieved her personal best jump her sophomore year with a jump of 17’6; although this year she came close with a jump of 17’5. When asked what she enjoys about long jump, Courtney said that she likes both the competitive and technical aspects of the event. With each event, especially field events, competitors usually have a certain routine or mark that they use. For Courtney, her routine consists of plenty of stretching prior to the event and completing plenty of run throughs to make sure that she is good on her mark. Her starting position if always around 70-75 inches from the mark. The most challenging meets for Courtney are where she is competing against other good jumpers. Those meets are usually very big with bigger schools in attendance. Those are the meets where Courtney makes sure to push herself to do her best. For Courtney, the landing part of long jump is something that she has always struggled with and would be the most difficult part of the event for her. She has watched the Olympic jumpers and noticed that they all landed the same way and had found that that was one area that she could never quite get down. One of Courtney’s two goals this year was to take over her sister, Lauren’s, long jump record. Unfortunately, she was not able to attain that goal, having been just two inches shy of it. Even though she did not set a new long jump record, she did achieve her goal of winning another state championship title. Courtney is very proud to have won her third state long jump title and to be able to bring that title back home to the Avon School District and Avon community. Congratulations Courtney on your Class B Long Jump State title and for ending your high school sports career on such a high note.
