It is not often that a family gets to watch three of their children play on the same sports team. Luckily for Joey and Antoinette Cournoyer that is their current reality when it comes to their sons’ Carter, Joey and Brady. Senior twins, Carter and Joey, along with their brother, Brady, a junior, all play on the WCS Red Raider boys’ basketball team.
The boys’ love of basketball started in the third grade when they were first able to start playing basketball with a team at the Wagner Boys & Girls Club. Carter enjoys the competition that basketball allows. Joey enjoys his ability to guard the opposing teams. Brady’s favorite part of playing basketball is blocking opponent’s shots and shooting.
All three boys play the forward position, which is a position that they all enjoy and would not change given the opportunity. One would think that because they all play the same position that they would be more competitive with each other, but really it is the opposite. The boys are very close and although competitive as siblings, as soon as they hit the court, they become teammates and work extremely well together. When they step out onto the court, the boys feed off of each other’s energy. They really enjoy playing basketball with each other. It feels natural since the boys are so close in age and grew up playing together.
Carter and Joey are enjoying their last season as Red Raiders and their last season playing with their “little” brother. Their personal goal for the boys’ basketball team is to make it to the state tournament this season. Both Carter and Joey will be attending the University of South Dakota Fall of 2024. If given the opportunity, both boys would continue to play basketball in any capacity after high school.
For the boys’ dad, Joey Sr., this has been a dream come true since it is the twin’s last year. Seeing all three of his sons play together is something that Joey Sr. has envisioned since they first started playing for the Boys and Girls Club basketball program. For mom, Antoinette, she just absolutely loves watching the three boys play together. Joey Sr. enjoys the chemistry that the boys have with one another. It is particularly special for him to watch his son’s Carter and Joey guide Brady as to where he needs to be and what to. The boys are very close in age and have always hung out together, but do fight and argue like siblings.
At 6’5”, Brady towers over his brothers who are both 6’4” and he loves using that to his advantage. Brady looks to Carter and Joey for guidance on the court. The twins guide Brady where he needs to be at the right place and right time. The twins are always giving Brady tips and trying to help Brady improve his game.
In the offseason the three spent a lot of time in the gym, lifting weights and putting up shots in their own backyard all summer long to try to get prepared for this season.
The boys have an older sister, Sydney. Their grandparents are Kathy and the late George Cournoyer Sr. and Gloria and the late William Aungie. The boys have a great cheering section for them at games. Their sister, Sydney, is their number one supporter. Besides their parents and sister, grandma Kathy, uncle Nick and auntie Krystle and their cousin, Resaiah, are almost always in the stands cheering the boys on. Throughout the years, whenever the boys had conflicting game schedules grandma Kathy and aunt Krystle would step up and go cheer at the other game.
The boys also enjoy playing baseball. When not busy with school or basketball, the boys enjoy going to the gym and spending time with their family.
Thank you, Carter, Joey and Brady for sharing with the community your experiences on playing on the same basketball team. The boys’ basketball Red Raider team is doing very well having won their seventh straight game. We wish you all the very best as your season continues.
