After Christmas break, the curriculum resumed with weekly short stories, articles, and new novels. The fifth graders are reading Narnia, the sixth graders are reading Hatchet, and seventh graders are reading Touching Spirit Bear. All three grades are really enjoying the novels. The fifth and sixth graders are also working on interactive notebooks for the year.
Mrs. Haenfler’s favorite moments are when a student asks if they can read another chapter of their novel. Mrs. Haenfler loves to watch them enjoy a book and ask to keep reading. She also enjoys watching students react to certain parts of their books and stories. A huge goal in her classroom is for her students to enjoy reading, so she loves anytime that they are into their books and enjoying reading.
Looking ahead for the rest of the year, Mrs. Haenfler is hoping for warmer weather and consistent school weeks. She also looks forward to seeing her students’ progress throughout this semester and realize all they have learned and accomplished. Her and her students also have a trip to Washington with the middle schoolers this summer. Both Mrs. Haenfler and the students are looking forward to that.
Mrs. Haenfler has been teaching in Avon for 10 years. She has been in middle school ELA for that entire time. Prior to Avon, she taught four years of 5/6 ELA at Wagner and four years of 1st grade at Gayville-Volin. Outside of school Mrs. Haenfler likes to spend time with my family and friends. She loves to watch her kids participate in activities they enjoy. She and her family also like to spend time on the river together. She also enjoys reading and shopping. A fun fact about Mrs. Haenfler is taking her last classes this semester at USD and will graduate in the spring with her Reading Specialist degree.
