CLASSROOM OF THE WEEK: FIRST GRADE

By
: Kaden Mixon
A typical day for Mrs. Kuhlman starts off with her greeting her kids at the door and getting morning hugs. Calendar time is her favorite. Her kids love sharing about their feelings, which help to set the tone for our busy day. For the remainder of the class day, they work on core subjects and take lots of brain breaks, which includes music she loves. The first grade just ended a unit on owls, leaves, and bats. Now they are on to learning about life on the Mayflower. She loves teaching history. One of Mrs. Kulman’s favorite memories so far this year is listening to her students belt out “Cover Me in Sunshine” by Pink. And they also like singing to “Tooty Ta Song” together. She does it along with them, but always makes sure that the door is locked first. It is so fun and silly. For the rest of the school year, she wishes for time to slow down for a bit. She loves fall activities and learning about leaves, owls, bats, scarecrows, and thankfulness. Mrs. Kulhman has been teaching in Avon since 1992, back when they used chalkboards! When not teaching first grade, Mrs. Kulhman enjoys flower gardening, taking walks, concerts, and shopping. Some other fun facts about Mrs.Kulhman: She is an only child. She speaks German. She grew up on a farm near Venturia, ND. Growing up on a farm, she raked hay, cultivated, and brought lunch out to the field. She loves to bake pies, and loves cats. Her cat Lucky was named by the current Freshmen class. She met Mr.Kulhman and Mrs.Gretschmann at her teaching position in Hosmer S.D, and they both ended up in her wedding! She loves concerts and buying shoes. Evening time Mr.Kuhlman buys traps, she gets a new pair of shoes!
