Katelyn Ulmer has been teaching 2nd Grade in Avon for eight years. A day in her classroom typically starts out with the second graders completing a morning paper, followed by calendar, daily news, and show and tell. Mrs. Ulmer says that she loves daily news because “I get to hear about what’s going on in the lives of my students.” Her class then attends specialsmusic, library, or computers. The second graders love computers because they get to learn how to type! After specials, the class completes their daily math lesson before enjoying a break at morning recess. The second graders are working on adding and subtracting two digit numbers. After recess, the second graders go to reading pirate time which is where they split into groups among various teachers and work on reading. Second grade concludes their morning by practicing spelling words and then eating lunch and going to recess. In the afternoon, the second graders work on phonics. After phonics, they split into groups again, this time for math pirate time. The rest of the afternoon focuses on reading.
The second graders just celebrated Halloween with a classroom party and they are really looking forward to all the Thanksgiving and Christmas activities! The second graders are writing about what they are the most grateful for this holiday season.
Mrs. Ulmer says that this school year she is looking forward to getting to know her students better each day. With the news of Mrs. Ulmer’s pregnancy, the second graders are so excited and always asking questions about the baby! She says “it truly has brought us closer as a class.”
When Mrs. Ulmer is not teaching, she likes to keep herself busy by bowling in women’s league on Monday nights in Tyndall and bowling on a coed league on Saturdays in Yankton. On Wednesdays, she enjoys playing volleyball in a league out of Yankton. On Sundays, Mrs. Ulmer enjoys watching her favorite football team- the Minnesota Vikings! She also loves to spend time with family and friends.
Mrs. Ulmer’s husband Scott Ulmer is a PA in Tyndall. The couple is expecting their first child together in March of 2024. Mr. and Mrs. Ulmer are already parents to their cat, Diggs “who I think may be less than thrilled to have to share mom and dad’s attention with someone else!” said Mrs. Ulmer.
