CHAMPIONS CROWNED, SEASON CONCLUDES LABOR DAY AT WAGNER

With the Wagner Labor Day celebration as the backdrop of the weekend, 59 cars signed in on Friday night with VonEschen Lawn and Landscape and Wagner Building and Supply presenting the action, and 61 joined the fray Monday for Season Championships, presented by R&R Excavating and the South Dakota Lottery. With titles on the line, both nights featured the Manthey Farms Sport Compacts, the Roth Custom Farming Hobby Stocks, the Ponca Valley Seed Sport Mods, the Butte Implement B-Mods and the C & B Operations of Wagner Late Models.

Friday night in the Sport Compacts, Connor Brown (Yankton) saw his championship season in victory lane once again, as he came from the sixth position to win. His brother Taylor Brown (Yankton) finished second, followed by Cody Feenstra (Corsica), Kevin Andersh (Wagner) and Tom Koster (Mitchell). Andersh was the hard charger, moving up seven spots, with Conner Brown and Cody Feenstra picking up heat wins.

The Hobby Stocks saw the points leader Joey Jaton (Wagner) add to his cushion with a victory from the fifth spot. Hard charger Matt Goth (Huron) moved up six spots to finish in the runner-up position. Taylor Blom (Corsica), Tori Wendell (Naper, NE) and Kipp DeGroot (Platte) rounded out the top five. Heat races were won by Joey Jaton, Matt Goth and Taylor Blom.

The Sport Mod division saw the point leader in that class outlast the field, as Dudley Schroeder, Jr (Armour) picked up the checkers. Following Schroeder, Jr were David Johnson (Columbus, NE), Tyler Afrank (Norfolk, NE), Jerry Pfeifer (Spencer, NE) and Logan Fernau (Creighton, NE). Jerry Pfeifer was the top mover of the night, advancing five spots from ninth and heat races were won by Josh Pfeifer (St. Paul, NE) and Dudley Schroeder, Jr.

The B-Mod class could be renamed the Myer-Mod class this season, with 12 of the 14 races won by either point leader Tyler Myers (Alexandria) or his younger brother Camden Myers (Ethan). With just a three-point separation between the two, the elder Tyler put his car in victory lane for the sixth time, increasing his lead to four points with one night remaining. Camden finished a strong second, with Kyle Pecena (O'Neill, NE), Wade Wright (Ravinia, SD) and Logan Kafka (Wagner) completing the top five. Heat races were won by Kyle Pecena and Camden Myers.

To wrap up the Friday night program, Eric Vanosdall (Hoskins, NE) was the cream of the crop, as he drove away from the rest of the field and secured victory. Brad Vogt (Pierce, NE), Gale Vogt (Yankton), Doug Tomka (Stanton, NE) and Jared Hoerle (Chambers, NE) completed the top five with Vanosdell winning the heat race as well.

Action for the 120th Labor Day celebration was opened with racing, so it's only fitting that action at the track would close out the weekend's festivities. The weather seemed more like November 7th than September 7th, as all in attendance battled 50-degree temperatures and 30-40 miles per hour north winds.

The Sport Compacts featured the brother duo of Connor Brown outlasting his brother Taylor Brown again to pick up his sixth win in seven starts. Taylor challenged Connor the entire race, but Connor put the exclamation point on a stellar season by winning the finale and the 2020 points tile. Following the Brown brothers were Kevin Andresh, Matthew Andersh (Wagner) and Sean Staples (Gregory). Matthew Andresh moved up seven spots from his 11th starting spot to be the top advancer and Connor Brown and Taylor Brown won their heat races.

The Hobby Stock class saw some drama develop, as Joey Jaton (Wagner) only had to finish the event and he would pick up another points championship. The team of Jordan Vosika and Chris Lindquist (Gregory) were in second and needed some help. They about got it.

Early in the event, Jaton was fighting for position from his 10th starting spot when he hit a slick spot on the track and spun to a stop. That was a big moment in the race as competitors only get one caution flag called on them. You pick up number two, you head to the pits for the night and are credited for a "did not finish" with no chance for improvement. With only one more try, Jaton was able to finish the event, finishing eighth, which was good enough to secure the title. Matt Goth won the feature, moving up seven spots to clain the victory, followed by Kipp DeGroot, Jordan Vosika, Logan Fitzpatrick (Worthing) and Dennis Powers (Avon), who started 19th, rounded up the top five.

The Sport Mods saw Dudley Schroeder, Jr with a significant lead in the points chase and all he had to do is take the green flag and complete one lap and the championship would be his. Mission Accomplished, as Schroeder, Jr had to retire midway through the event. By completing at least one lap, Schroeder, Jr became the 2020 Sport Mod champion. As far as the race itself goes, Josh Pfeifer returned to victory lane for the sixth time in seven races, as he held off challenges from Tyler Afrank for the win. Kendell McCarthy (Naper, NE), Logan Fernau and Logan McMartin (Vermillion) rounded out the top five. Heat races were won by Josh Pfeifer and Tyler Afrank.

The B-Mod class came down to simple math. If Camden Myers could finish four positions better than his brother Tyler Myers, they would tie for the title. As the green flag flew, they started next to each other, with Camden inside row three and Tyler outside row three. Camden did everything in his power, finally chasing down race leader Kyle Pecena to take the top spot. Meanwhile, Tyler had to work through some traffic, but was eventually able to run to second. With that finish, Tyler Myers beats his brother Camden for the title by just three points. Camden finished with his fifth feature win of 2020, while Tyler finished with seven. Only Logan Kafka and Wade Wright were victorious this season in this class. Following Camden and Tyler, Kyle Pecena took third with Logan Kafka and Wade Wright rounding out the top five. Heat races were won by Chuck Chernotik, Jr (Fulton) and Camden Myers.

The final race of the night came when the Late Models rolled out and all Doug Tomka had to do is complete a lap and he would be crowned the 2020 champ. Tomka started in the third position, but the weekend would belong to Eric Vanosdall. The Hoskins, NE hot shoe dominated the weekend by picking up the two-night sweep and did so in convincing fashion. Tomka, finishing second, secured the 2020 Late Model championship, with Jared Hoerle, Jared Jelsma (Springfield) and Rod Barse (Waubay) completing the top five.
