CELEBRATING NATIONAL HAIRSTYLIST APPRECIATION DAY

By
Alyssa Mathis

This year National Hairstylist Appreciation Day is celebrated on April 25th. Hairstylists and colorists do important work all day, every day, whether it is a fixing a bad haircut, advising on a new style or color or just making someone feel beautiful and more like themselves. The Wagner community has some great stylists at the town’s beauty salon, Town and Country. Vicki Jo Koupal, Kara Hanan, Deb Uherka, Dawn Waters and Nikki Sandven. Together these ladies have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the beauty profession.

Vickie Koupal is the current owner/operator of Town and Country Beauty Salon. Vicki has been a stylist for the past 39 years, 35 of which have been worked in Wagner. Vicki worked for Doris Hosek who owned the salon for 31 years before finally retiring and selling the business to Vicki in 2006. When she first started working for Doris, Town and Country was located north across the street from James Drug. In 1996 the salon moved to its current address of 207 N. Main.

The stylists at Town and Country offer men’s, women’s and children’s cuts, perms, colors, facial waxing, pedicure, tanning and ear piercing. For Vicki, she enjoys providing all the services that the salon offers. The best part of the job of her job is being able to help people feel happy about themselves. Vicki stays up today on the latest trends and styles in several ways. She and several of her stylists are headed to a Hair Show at the end of April and Vicki does salon trainings and watches Pinterest.

Vicki has been married to her husband, Terry, for 38 years. The couple has two children Steven and Jessica. Steven and his wife, Taylor have two sons, Carter and Hayes. Jessica and her husband Stephen have two children Natalie and Jaxson. When Vicki is not busy working, she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and farm pets. Vicki has been very active in the community throughout the years. She is currently a member of the Wagner Chamber of Commerce.

Deb Uherka has worked part time for Town and Country Salon for the past 43 years; she has been a stylist for 49 years. Deb is trained in perms, styles and men’s, women’s and children’s haircuts. There is a long standing inside joke at the salon that Deb is referred to as “The Perm Lady”. She has enjoyed getting to know her family over the years when they come into the salon for services. It has been nice to watch them grow as she does.

Deb has been married to her husband, Norm, for the last 48 years. The couple have two beautiful grandsons, Zander and Max. When Deb is not working at the salon she enjoys quilting, working in the garden, canning what she grows in her garden, sewing (especially for her daughter when she was younger), trying new dessert recipes and being her husband’s helping hand on the farm. Deb and her husband, Norm are 4-H leaders and Deb helps at church.

Dawn Waters has worked for Town and Country Salon for the past 12 years, but has been a hairstylist for the past 32 years. Dawn specializes in colors and cutting services. She utilizes Hair Shows, Pinterest and TikTok to stay up to date on the latest trends and styles. Dawn is married to her husband, Mike, and they have two children Ryan and Grace. When Dawn is not busy working, she enjoys gardening, canning and crafting.

Kara Hanan has worked for Town and Country Beauty Salon for the past ten years, but has been a hairstylist for the past 15 years. Kara is also trained in pedicure services. Color services are what Kara enjoys doing most, especially balayage. For Kara staying up to date on the latest hair trends and styles is important, so she watches hair tutorials online, Pinterest and Behindthechair.com for education. Kara is married to her husband, Mick, and the couple has three children Connor (8), Kenna, (6) and Kellen (4). When she is not busy working, Kara enjoys singing and songwriting.

Nicki Sandven has been working for Town and Country Salon for the past almost three months. She has ten years of experience as a hairstylist. Nicki really enjoys cutting men’s hair and doing haircuts in general. Nicki is always looking to learn more and stay up to date on the latest styles and trends. She watches YouTube and Suplex Houses hairstyling classes. Nicki resides in Avon with her husband, Darin and their three children, Taylor, Carter and Spencer. When Nicki is not working, she enjoys shopping, watching TV, journaling and spending time with friends and family.

Thank you, ladies of Town and Country Beauty Salon, for all the services that you provide and your dedication to your profession and the Wagner and surrounding communities.
