BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB - DAY FOR KIDS

By
Alyssa Mathis

The annual Boys and Girls Club of Wagner Day for Kids was held on September 29th from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. This is an annual event going back over 20 years. The event includes the fundraiser, The Duck Pluck. Ducks are sold singly or in flocks of ten by the wonderful Boys and Girls Club staff. They have 800 ducks to sell. 100% of the money raised goes back to the kids enrolled at the Boys and Girls Club in Wagner whether it be for programs, supplies, new equipment, etc. This year, Jerry and Kathy Henke, donated a 1972 Chrysler Boat as the grand prize. There were 50 other individuals and businesses that donated prizes to make this such a successful event for the organization. Altogether there were 81 prizes available which included bikes, chamber bucks, gift certificates, etc. The kids enjoyed an afternoon of fun games that included an obstacle course, donut races, bowling, rock/paper/scissor contests, giant board games and game room tournaments.

The Boys and Girls Club of Wagner serves approximately 130 local children daily. That is roughly the same amount or even more than are served in Boys and Girls Club locations in large cities. Every day after school the Club serves/ cooks a snack that is sometimes more along the lines of a meal. Upcoming events for the Boys and Girls Club will be the Thanksgiving and Christmas meals that the staff put on for the club members and their families. These are usually served the day before the students are out of school for each break. If interested in volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club in Wagner, please contact Executive Director, Pat Breen, or Unit Director, Laken Nedved for more information.
