BIG CROWD FOR SEASON OPENER AT WAGNER SPEEDWAY

The 2020 racing season at Wagner Speedway was a night that won't soon be forgotten. 64 cars signed in and hundreds of fans enjoyed a beautiful evening at the track, presented by Best Propane of Wagner.

The main events began with the Roth Custom Farms Hobby Stocks. Jordan Vosika (Gregory) began his quest from the seventh starting spot and finally took the lead with five laps to go. Vosika took the low line off turn four to pass Joey Jaton (Wagner) and held on for the feature event. Jaton, piloting his car for the last four laps with no power steering, would challenge Vosika late, but to no avail. Vosika discussed the final laps in Victory Lane, "That was a blast. I was just watching the green flag the whole time and I knew I could get a good jump on (Jaton). I knew when Joey was up there it was going to be a tough race. That was really fun." Following Vosika and Jaton across the line were Dustin Jackson (O'Neill, NE), Derrick Scott (Geddes) and Shawn Sucha (Orchard, NE). Heat races were won by Craig Hoffer (Winner) and Vosika.

The Butte Implement B-Mods would take center stage next and a familiar face would be smiling at the end. Camden Myers (Ethan) would chase pole sitter Kyle Pecena (O'Neill, NE) for the first five circuits, until Myers made his move. Winning the race to the start/finish line, Myers led the remaining 10 laps to secure the victory. Myers says he saw an opening and he took it. "(Pecena) was coming in a little bit higher in the corner where it was slick and he was sliding up a little bit. I saw that so I started coming in on the bottom, he got kind of crossed up and I made my move." Pecena would settle for second, followed by Tyler Myers (Alexandria), Wade Wright (Armour) and Tanner James (Mitchell). Heat races were won by Tyler Myers and Pecena.

Next up would be the Ponca Valley Seeds Sport Mods and another familiar face would be shown the checkered flag, as Dudley Schroeder, Junior (Armour) would be one of the many drivers who came a long way to the front. It didn't take Schroeder long to take the point from his ninth starting spot, getting by Josh Pfeifer (St. Paul, NE) on lap six and would drive away with top honors. Wes Hochstein (Randolph, NE) started 13th to finish second, Tyler Afrank (Norfolk, NE) started 14th and raced to third, Lane Cornwell (Albion, NE) began 10th and settled for fourth and Josh Pfeifer would round out the top five. Schroeder knows he was fortunate to come away with this triumph. "I think I just got lucky running out there. I kind of sent it into the corner and it went where it went and it stuck and we passed people. It was fun." Heat winners were Afrank and Schroeder.

The following event would be the C & B Operations Late Models and Jared Hoerle (Chambers, NE) would make quick work on the field. The driver they call "Swifty", started fourth and took over the lead on lap five to pick up checkered flag honors. Hoerle knew it took some finesse to be standing in the winner's circle. "I didn't think (the track) was going to get as dry as it did. This little motor still works on a dry slick and I gave it all it had and it worked. I was hittin' the cushion up top and flat footin' it!" Following Hoerle were Brad Vogt (Pierce, NE), Doug Tomka (Stanton, NE) finishing in third from his ninth starting spot. Seth Fischer (Wagner) settled for fourth and Justin Havranek (Wagner) would round out the top five. Heat winners include Fischer and Hoerle.

The DK Flooring and Custom 305 Sprint Cars would hit the dirt next and "Doc" made a house call to the high banks of Wagner and operated a wire to wire victory. Daniel (Doc) Nekolite (O'Neill, NE) would lead from wire to wire in the 15 lap "A" feature, holding off challenges from John Lambertz (Sioux Falls) and Dusty Ballenger (Harrisburg). Those three would finish first to third respectively, with Ballenger coming from seventh. Bob Dvorak (Stuart, NE) came home fourth and Jacob Hugues (Hartford) would round out the top five. Nekolite praised one of his competitors and his crew for even allowing him to be at the track to race, let alone win. "When we checked oil on Sunday, I didn't even know if we would be able to be here, so I have to give a huge thank you to the 32 team (Trefer Waller, O'Neill, NE). They let us rent a motor from them so we could be here to race tonight, so I wouldn't even be here tonight if it wasn't for them and my guys. We worked until midnight all week just to be able to race tonight." Heats were won by Lambertz and Ballenger.

Lastly, the Manthey Farms Sport Compact class saw Connor Brown (Yankton) start fourth and come away with the top honors, followed by Taylor Brown (Yankton), Shannon George (Bagley, MN), Shawn McKnelly (Hartford) and Tom Koster (Mitchell) would complete the top five.

Racing will resume Friday night, June 19th at the track, when the Namminga Hay Grinding and Fox Hay Grinding Late Model Street Stocks invade the speedway, joining the C & B Operations of Wagner Late Models, the Butte Implement B-Mods, the Ponca Valley Seeds Sport Mods and the Roth Custom Farming Hobby Stocks. Hot laps at 7:15pm with racing to follow. For more information, check out wagnerspeedway.com or follow the track on Facebook at The All New Wagner Speedway.
