With four medalists, the Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon girls scored 69 points for seventh place at the Girls State Wrestling Tournament on February 22-24 in Sioux Falls. Britney Rueb and Peyton Hellmann stood on the top step and Hadley Kracht and Ashley Tolsma both placed eighth. Pierre T.F. Riggs narrowly won the team title with 139 points followed by Canton-138.5, Harrisburg-102.5, Aberdeen Central-86, Lakota Tech-81, Watertown-80.5, Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon-69, Sturgis Brown-63, Brandon Valley-59, and Rapid City Central-57.5 to list the top ten teams. Britney Rueb met Quinn Butler (Lemmon/McIntosh) in the finals at 120 claiming a 5-2 decision avenging a 6-4 loss just a couple of weeks earlier. Earlier she defeated McKenzie Scott (Dakota Valley) by fall in 2:16, won by fall over Kanyn Padden (Harding County) in 1:02, and in the semi-finals won by fall over Danny Borja (Mitchell) in 5:53. Britney finished the season at 28-2, and this was her third state championship. Hadlee Krach-126 won by fall over River Bailey (Custer) in 3:04 in the first round, lost to eventual champion Regina Stoeser (Harrisburg) by fall in 1:34, won by fall over Jersey Folkens (Canton) in 1:25, lost by fall to third-place finisher Cateri Yellow Hawk (Sully Buttes) in 2:58, and in the seventh-place match lost to Jessica Waln (Lakota Tech) by fall in 2:54 to finish 8th. Hadlee ended her year with a 31-17 record. Peyton Hellman met Madison Snyder (Sturgis Brown) in the championship winning a 16-3 major decision. Earlier she won by fall over Teagan Vining (St. Thomas More) in 2:23, won by fall over Jasmin Perez (Mobridge-Pollock) in :42, and in the semi-finals won by fall over Brooke Grajczyk (Webster Area) in :28. Peyton finished the season at 42-0, and became the first girl in South Dakota to have won four state titles. Ashley Tolsma-165 decisioned Taylor DeJong (Mitchell) 8-4 in the first round, then lost by fall to runner-up and top seeded Maizy Mathis (Brookings) in 2:23, won by a 9-4 decision over Blair Merkwan (Vermillion), lost to Natalia Long (Canton) by fall in 2:44, and in the seventh-place match lost to Brittney Hanson (Hill City) by fall in 1:54 to finish 8th. Ashley ended the season at 18-20. Hope Kemnitz-185 lost to runner-up and top seeded Allison Konrad (Watertown) in 1:33, and then lost to Tallie Brehm (Rapid City Stevens) by fall in 1:35. Hope finished her season at 11-16. We had some tough draws with Hope meeting the top seed in the first round, and Hadlee and Ashley did the same in the second round. Those three now know what the state tournament is all about and look to improve their finish next year. Congratulations to Britney and Peyton on continuing their state titles. We are very proud of all five. It has been a good season; they are a fun group. The girls thank you for all of your support.
