Avon’s City Council recently appointed a new alderman, Paul Thury, to fill a vacancy on the council. This is Paul’s first time serving on the city council. As his current position is an appointee, Paul will serve on the council until this coming spring’s election. The process for Paul to be appointed as an alderman began when he was first approached and asked if he had any interest in filling the position once it became available. Paul then attended the December city council meeting where he let both the mayor and council members know that he would be interested and willing to fill the position, should the council wish to appoint him. Paul had not really contemplated ever serving on the city council until he was approached but is happy to expand his horizons and learn new things. He is looking forward to learning more about the inner workings of city government. As an active member of the Avon community, Paul serves on several boards in Avon and throughout the area. Being active and knowledgeable about different aspects of the Avon community he feels he will help him better serve the city council. As Paul is a part of several community boards, he is well aware that very seldom are things what they appear to be from the outside looking in. He is very much looking forward to having an inside view of the city government. As Paul works at Community Bank, he is a numbers person and is very intrigued by the revenue and expense side of city government. When asked what Paul sees as the biggest issues facing the city of Avon or things that he would like to see the council address, he said that he is of the mindset of seeing this position as a learning opportunity. Paul also responded that when it comes to seeing more involvement from the Avon residents in city council discussions, that he is a supporter of seeing more involvement from people at any level, in any organization or group. Paul knows that there will be a learning curve for him to catch up on items and issues that are presented to the council, but he is open-minded and willing to discuss any issues and items with anyone. What Paul loves most about Avon is that it is a small closeknit community. It has been and continues to be a great place for him and his wife, Annie, to raise their three children. Even though Avon is a small community, it has a lot of great businesses that really support the town and its residents. The Avon School District offers an education that is second to none. For a town of less than 600 residents, Avon has a lot to offer and a lot to be proud of. Paul is proud to serve as the city’s new alderman.
