AVON SCHOOL DISTRICT NEW STAFF SPOTLIGHT - JILL IRWIN

By
Alyssa Mathis
The Avon School District has hired Jill Irwin to teach as a middle school and high school special education teacher for the 2024-2025 school year. Jill has been teaching for 19 years. She spent one year as an English Language Arts teacher and the other 18 years as a preschool teacher. Before taking the position with the Avon School District, Jill had been teaching preschool at the Wagner Community School. Jill knew that she wanted to be a teacher since she was a kindergartener. She even has a picture of herself when she was in kindergarten at the Avon School District on class career day. She was dressed up like a teacher with a construction paper necklace hanging around her neck with the word “teacher” written on it. This picture along with her other classmates and their future career choices was published in the Avon Clarion. Her mother cut it out of the paper, had it framed and gave it to Jill to keep on her desk at school. She has recently added a “dream big” sign next to the picture as a reminder to her students that they can really achieve their dreams, because their teacher is living proof. As Jill is originally from Avon, she is excited to return to teach at her alma mater. The good old Avon adage of “Once a pirate always a pirate!” is very true and Jill is happy to finally be able to say that she is home. When asked what made Jill want to become a member of the Avon’s school team, she said that she was ready to come home and give back to the community that she grew up in. Jill feels that she has so much to offer to the students of Avon and wants to be a part of the reason that they look back with pride on their memories of their time as Pirates, just as Jill has. Jill is looking forward to everything in her classroom this year. She cannot wait to build new relationships, meet new people, learn a new curriculum, follow the special education laws and be a part of all the small things that make Avon special. She is also looking forward to showing her own children what an Avon Pirate Homecoming is like. For Jill, Homecoming in Avon was such a special event that really highlights the school pride. She has the fondest memories of all the different homecomings growing up, giving her some unforgettable memories. Goals for Jill’s classroom for the 2024-2025 school year are to build relationships and gain trust from the students and families in the Avon School District. Jill has been blessed with two amazing children, Bennett who is 13 and is a seventh grader and Carollee who is eight and is entering second grade. Welcome back home to the Avon School District, we hope you have an amazing year!
