On Friday, April 12, Wagner took part in the Avon Relays on what turned out to be a gorgeous day for track and field with fair skies, temperatures, and a wind that was almost nonexistent.
The boys team tied for 2nd place overall in the meet, scoring 103 points. They ended up with four champions on the day. Parker Petry put the shot 42’8” to claim top honors in that event. Jesse Zephier went 38’ 11 ½” to win the triple jump. Brayden Kreber ran a 23.69 second 200 meter dash and also anchored the
4x100 relay time that triumphed with a time of 45.42 seconds.
The most noteworthy news for Wagner’s boys, however, came with a second-place finish. Jhett Breen entered the 300 hurdles just a half second behind the school record. He had run
a 41.1 in Wagner the previous Tuesday and won that race by three seconds. In Avon, though, he had some competition as Viborg-Hurley’s Luke Campbell ran right with Breen until the end when he nudged him out for first place. It was initial disappointment as coming in second place wasn’t the goal. But once the times were announced, things didn’t seem quite so bad as he learned that he was the new school record holder with a time of
40.45 seconds. This was a record Jhett’s had his eye on for some time now. He’s worked hard at this event over the years and that work came to fruition on this day. Congratulations, Jhett!
