AVON PUBLIC LIBRARY MINUTES OF AUGUST 23RD
Vp-secretary Julie Minow
Meeting was called to order at 8:20 p.m. Attendance included Ilene Muller, Twila Lukkes, Mary Beth Driesen, Julie Minow, Mary Hurd, and Loretta Knodel.
The library’s checking account ending balance as of July 31st was presented by Twila Lukkes as $16,556.34. Twila Lukkes is also working on a spreadsheet to document and track the Library’s petty cash fund.
Whitney Podzimeck communicated with Loretta Knodel about ordering a book. Mary Hurd was going to check the library’s inventory and order it if the library didn’t have it.
Summer reading program top winners are still being calculated. Twila Lukkes will finish calculating winners in the following week. The Farm Safety Book Winner was Brynn Baade. Farm Safety Poster winner was Trenton Uchytil. The young authors book publishing update is still coming. Discussion was had about the Bomgaars gift card prizes being a good enticement for our patrons to read more books during the summer reading program. Twila remarked that there were so many books read that not all the cut outs symbolizing each book read by a patron could fit on the wall. Twila brought up that we had an issue of patrons taking books home without checking them out. Board discussed trying to have a more efficient process during the summer reading program days when we have forty plus patrons returning and checking books out in hopes of negating this issue. An idea was presented that we could have a return bin at check in point for patrons to drop their books in. A board member would check in the books on the system during the story. It was also discussed that next year patrons will need to be in good standing to be a winner and receive a prize. This will hopefully encourage patrons to return books on time.
Currently the library has a ten book limit per patron. At this time the board agrees that this is a reasonable number however it was discussed how it might not be fair if all ten books were coming from the new arrival section. We decided to put a two book limit on the new arrivals, so more patrons have a chance to check out books from that section.
Patrons have been using the drop box outside of the library to return books, however Twila has noticed some books are getting damaged because of the chute. An idea was suggested that we use a token system to encourage kids to come into the library to return books. One book returned would earn you one token. Ten tokens would earn you a trip to Twila’s treasure chest.
We are using the Soukup donation to order furniture and also plan to order a plaque recognizing their donation. If there are leftover funds from the donations, we will look into ordering a mural painted by Johnny Swatek.
Julie Minow is still working on her Literacy course for the accreditation. She is enrolling into a new course but is able to use all of her completed work.
Movie nights always go well, and we are looking to kick off the summer reading program with a movie night in the spring. Mary Hurd has applied for the Rob See-Co grant to purchase more boy books. She has not heard who has received it yet. We are going to look into having a poster board where people can put comments on it about the books they are reading to encourage more conversations about books. In the furniture catalog, we are going to order a more comfy seating option for our patrons to encourage them to sit and read. An idea to draw patrons into the library is having read it and it nights. You would try the foods that you read about. Many homes do not have a DVD player because people are use to using a streaming service. The library has a wide selection of DVD’s to check out. A DVD player has been donated by Rick and Mary Hurd so these DVD’s can still be viewed. We are also going to look at being able to offer a streaming service rental similar to how patrons read books on the Libby app. Patrons who come after school often stay for hours and are looking for a snack. To encourage these patrons to read rather than just play games on the computer, we talked about having a reward system. If you read for 10 minutes, you can earn a snack. It was also brought up that the kids have a hard time being quiet while playing the computer games. Loretta Knodel shared with us about the Pirate Way and the Gold Standard. This is what the Avon Public School is using to keep the kids engaged, responsible, and respectful. The library will try to adapt this standard and put forth a set of expectations for the patrons. Lastly it was brought to our attention that we could have patrons who like to open carry weapons. We need to find out the SD laws so we know best how to address a situation should a patron open carry a weapon at future library hosted events.
Meeting was motioned to adjourn at 9:55 by Julie Minow and seconded by Ilene Muller.
