The Pirate golf team kicked off their season on Monday April 8th at the Mitchell Lakeview golf course. This 2024 season the Pirates are being coached by Jeff Haenfler. This is his tenth year as the golf coach.
Senior members of the golf team are McKenna Kocmich, Landon Thury and Noah Watchorn. Junior team members are Trevor Eggers and Gunnar Voigt. Jake Namminga is the only underclassmen on the team and is a freshman.
Some of last season’s highlights include Trevor Eggers finished the post season narrowly missing qualifying for state in the region golf meet. Another highlight was McKenna Kocmich finished towards the top of the Region throughout the season. McKenna unfortunately had her season end with a broken leg and was unable to participate in the post season.
This season’s goals are to improve throughout the season and have the team put themselves in a position to qualify for the state tournament during the region meet at the end of May. Coach Haenfler is looking forward to working with all of the student athletes throughout the year to improve their knowledge of the game of golf. Golf is not an easy sport to learn and it is a sport that Jeff loves, so it is fun to watch them grow and learn the game. Coach Haenfler’s philosophy for building a successful team and program is hard work and dedication to the sport of golf is needed which comes from working on their golf game outside of practice. He hopes to give the students the tools during practice to better themselves when working on their own.
Best of luck in the season to the Pirate golfers. Their next golf match will be on Friday, April 19th when they attend the Burke/Gregory invite.
