AVON LADY PIRATES FALL IN HARD-FOUGHT SEASON FINALE AT GAYVILLE-VOLIN

The Avon Lady Pirates varsity basketball team closed out their season with a narrow 55-50 loss on the road against Gayville-Volin Lady Raiders in region action. The game was a back-and-forth battle from the opening tip. Avon trailed 13-12 after the first quarter but pulled ahead 27-26 by halftime. A strong third quarter gave the Pirates a 42-38 advantage, but Gayville-Volin surged in the fourth, outscoring Avon 17-9 to secure the win. Rilyn Thury led the Avon offense with 16 points, followed by Kaydence Metzger with 13 and Brielle Voigt with 11. Voigt also paced the team on the boards with 5 rebounds. The Pirates shot efficiently from the floor, hitting 46% of their field goals (18 of 39), including 35% from beyond the arc (6 of 17) and 55% on two-point attempts (12 of 22). Avon was perfect from the free-throw line, converting all 8 attempts. The team committed 14 turnovers compared to Gayville-Volin’s 10. Gayville-Volin finished with slightly better shooting numbers, connecting on 48% of field goals (19 of 40) and 52% of two-point shots, though they struggled from three-point range at 29% (2 of 7). Their free-throw shooting lagged at 54% (15 of 28). Despite the loss, the Pirates showed grit and teamwork throughout the season. Avon’s players leave the court having gained valuable experience and memories that will carry into next year.
