Avon High School Junior, Aziah Meyer, was named the Most Valuable Player from the Class 9B State Championship game against the Faulkton Area Trojans November 9th. Aziah is the son of Jamey Meyer and Alvin Gunter. Aziah’s love for the game started in third grade when he first began playing football after his mom, Jamey, signed him up. He has been playing the game ever since. Aziah loves the intensity and hard work that is required to achieve the kind of outcome like the Avon Pirates playing in the Dakota Dome. His favorite moment/play of the season was during the Corsica game when Paxton Bierema was in the process of being sacked so Bierema threw the ball up with Meyer catching it and running it in for a touchdown. After Avon won the championship game, Aziah could not believe it at first. His short-lived first reaction was soon followed by an overwhelming sense of happiness. He knew that in that moment all of the hard work that he and his teammates had put in throughout the season was all worth it. Being named MVP of the championship game was just icing on the cake to end an incredible season. Aziah felt very honored and elated to be named MVP. Meyer’s season stats include 35 touchdowns, 60 tackles and 1849 yards rushed. With stats like these, Aziah is a force to be reckoned with on the field. He is already looking forward to his senior football season. He hopes that the Pirates will make it to state again and that Coach Lukkes will guide the team to the Dakota Dome again. Aziah would like thank his coaches, Coach Lukkes and Brad for stepping up and helping to lead the team to the Dome. He would also like to thank the community, fans and his family for all the support throughout the season. As hard as it is to believe when asked, Aziah does not think he is being scouted by any teams to play college football. Surely, that will not be the case for long. Any team would be lucky to have Meyer play for him. His love for the game and hard work on and off the field will take him far and make him an amazing asset to any football program. Congratulations on a fantastic season! We cannot wait to see what you and the rest of the Pirates have in store for the next season.
