THE AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY, GREER POST #11 IS HONORING LEO NOVAK AS OCTOBER VETERAN OF THE MONTH.
The American Legion Auxiliary, Greer Post #11 is honoring Leo Novak as October Veteran of the month.
Novak is a Veteran of the Vietnam War having enlisted in the National Guard in 1958 after graduating from high school. This was Leo's first time being away from home. Novak went to basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Army Base in Missouri. He left for basic with three other Wagner area men Kenny Soulek, Percy Shrank, and Gilbert Caperstein. After basic training, he received training in communications followed by on the job training in his specialty area. Novak served eight years with the National Guard during which he received a medal as a qualifying marksman and was discharged as an E-4.
Leo was born and raised in Wagner. After returning from his training, Novak came home and started farming but eventually worked for the sale barn, the COOP and Commercial State Bank. He met his wife, Ruth Honomichl, and they married in 1962. They have two children Suzette and Terry. They lived on the farm and raised cattle, hogs, chickens and ducks. Leo's hobbies include fishing for bullheads and walleyes throughout his life.
Novak's parents encouraged him to join the military. They believed that the young men of their family should do their service to their country. Both Leo and his brother served in the military. The National Guard was the perfect fit for Novak. He could serve his country and also work at home. Leo's son, Terry also served in the military as a marine.
Novak has been a member of the Greer Post #11 American Legion for over fifty years. His wife Ruth, was also an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Greer Post #11. Novak looks at his military time in the National Guard as he was doing his duty; they learned a trade in case their service was needed during the war.
Thank you Leo for your service and for being October's Veteran of the month.
