AHS VETERAN'S DAY PR OGRAM

By
The Avon High School (AHS) held their annual Veteran’s Day Program Wednesday, November 8, at 2:45 p.m. The program began with the posting of the colors by Megan Gretschmann and Kate Swier. The National Anthem was led by Rick Hurd, followed by the Avon American Legion Commander, Kenny Powers leading the room in the Pledge of Allegiance. Superintendent and Veteran, Tom Culver, gave the program welcome. Then the recognition of the Veterans present took place where while taps was played Veterans around the room were asked to stand to be honored and recognized. Afterwards, there was a moment of silence held in honor of all fallen soldiers. Pastor Aaron Rush then led the room in prayer for those who continue to serve to protect our country and our freedom. The AHS Student Body President, McKenna Kocmich then addressed the room. Because AHS was holding their Veteran’s Day Program November 8th, McKenna told the story behind the very moving song The 8th of November by Big & Rich. She explained how the song is actually a true story about South Dakota Veteran, Niles Harris. Afterward McKenna’s address, the AHS chorus sang, There She Stands, a song arranged by David Hamilton. The Veteran’s Day program ended with a video presentation put together by Superintendent Culver. The first video was about the origins of Veteran’s Day and the second was The Freedom Rock Tour. Ray ‘Bubba’ Sorensen II painted a unique freedom rock for all 99 of Iowa’s counties that each county proudly displays. One of Bubba’s goals in doing this Freedom Rock Tour was to honor America’s Veterans.
