After several months of planning for Sunday, June 9th the stage is finally set for the 4th annual “605 Unity Jam” to be held at the park at Wagner Lake on the west side of Wagner, S.D.. This special day will begin at 10:00 a.m. with an out door non-denominational church service, where everyone is invited to attend. At noon, the “Unity Jam” will begin and is a “jamboree of art and music” with art and craft vendors, food trucks, a wide variety of musical acts and cultural related programing through out the day.
The activities will feature a youth pow wow that will include explanations about Native dress and meaning behind the songs and dance, as well as an invitation to all who would like to join in with the cultural dance. There will also be a teen spike ball tournament and a bean bag tournament for adults with a cash prizes. Another activity includes a cardboard boat race to help raise funds for a new city swimming pool and a Czech Kolache eating contest for bragging rights to follow. In addition there will be a fishing derby for youth ages 6-15 starting at 1:00 with youth vying for a part of the $600 worth of fishing related prizes. In addition there will be traditional Native and Czech dance demonstrations and more along with a wide variety of live music.
For those who enjoy live music, the day will feature a wide variety of entertainers, such as: Two Wheat’s and a Blonde from Armour, a local favorite artist Kara Hanan, Uncle Roy and the Boys playing many of your favorite country songs, Maggie in the Meantime with their traditional Celtic style of music, Mariachi Con Amigoes with their Spanish style of music, the ever popular Kobe Jorden with his original and cover music and also Mogen’s Heroes playing your favorite 60’s, 70’s and 80’s songs.

The purpose of this event is to focus on increasing cultural awareness, understanding, acceptance and appreciation of all cultures. The Yankton Sioux Tribe and the Wagner Chamber of Commerce took the historical step to create the “Unity Buffalo” that you will see when you attend. The park is a jewel of Wagner and the message of the “Unity Buffalo” strikes to the heart of what can happen when you choose to work together. The “Unity Buffalo” serves as a lasting reminder of what has been created. The creation of this event at this location points out the importance of what our future can look like. The admission for this event is free to all. Bring your own lawn chair or blanket and please, no coolers. There is plenty of shade so enjoy the day at the lake and the message of the “Unity Buffalo”!
