The Lady Pirates kick off their volleyball season on Tuesday, September 3rd with the varsity game starting at 8 p.m. in Parkston. This year’s team has been putting in a lot of time and work in their offseason to get ready for this season. Losing three very talented seniors has required that teammates step up and fill roles that the team will need to be successful this season. This year’s Avon volleyball team will once again be led by Head Coach, Lindsey Fathke who is in her third year of coaching the team. She is assisted by Coach Connie Gretschmann. This year’s team goals are to keep improving from last season and see what all the team can accomplish throughout the season. Both the coaches and team members are looking forward to a great year of competitive volleyball. The 2024 volleyball team has five seniors Karlie DeVries, Kinley Doom, Kaeli Wallinga, Lila Vanderlei and Macy Voigt. The team returns Lila Vanderlei a middle hitter who was named to both the Great Plains and LMVC All Conference teams. These seniors will be looked to for leadership both on and off the court. The team has six returning letter winners Lila Vanderlei, Lexi Vanderlei, a junior outside hitter; Macy Voigt, a senior right hitter; Rilyn Thury, a sophomore outside hitter; Jordyn Voigt a sophomore defensive specialist/libero; and Kaeli Wallinga a senior middle hitter. Team members that will need to step into their roles this season will be Kinley Doom, a senior middle hitter/right hitter; Karlie DeVries, a senior setter; and Abby Gretschmann, a junior right hitter.
