Scavenger’s Journey is an approximately 180-mile-long shopping experience in 18 communities in central South Dakota, consisting of yard sales, organized flea markets, farmer’s markets, specialty shops and more. It is being modeled after similar existing events like Nebraska’s Junk Jaunt and the Kansas Highway 36 Treasure Hunt and other similar events across the country. It is our hope that this event will grow to include more communities each year and become a fun activity that brings people to South Dakota. Our small towns have a lot to offer, and we feel this could be a nice boost for them. The following communities and their surrounding areas are participating in 2023: Winner, Platte, Plankinton, Stickney, White Lake, Kimball, Chamberlain, Reliance, Kennebec, Murdo, Belvidere, Kadoka, Geddes, Lake Andes, and Wagner, South Dakota.

How can I participate in the Scavenger’s Journey?

- Obtain a registration form online, at www.scavengersjourney. com/about or pick up a form from City Hall at 440 Lake Street or from the Lake Andes Public Library at 500 Main Street.

- If you are not from the Lake Andes area and/or don’t have a place to set up, ask the Lake Andes coordinator (Mary Jo Parker, 605 481-0011) about the options available for set up. There are also organized multi-dealer flea markets with limited spaces available. Note: Multi-dealer sites may require additional fees.

- Complete your registration form. If filled out online, submit online and pay via PayPal. If printed, attach the registration fee, and mail directly to the address provided on the registration form by the deadline. Deadlines are as follows: Business or Event ads- March 31st, Rummage Sale ads May 15th if mailing or May 20th if emailing.

- Late registrations will not make it into the Scavenger’s Journey Official Guidebook but will receive official participant signage to place at site of sale.

-Note: Off-site rummage sales (not in your home) are required to charge sales tax, as applicable.

- Get ready for your sale! The Scavenger’s Journey Guidebook will be for sale in Lake Andes on June 23rd for $10.00 each and will contain ads and addresses for community businesses, events, and rummage sales. If you would like to see a guidebook from 2022 one will be available to view at the library or City Office.

As you participate in the “Journey” you will find a treasure trove of goods and hospitality by visiting the vendors & businesses in our participating towns. This one-of-a-kind South Dakota event is brought to you by numerous volunteers and supporters in the 18 towns who make it possible.
