WILHEMENA PATTERSON

Wilhemena Patterson, 46, of Lower Brule died Monday, July 14 at her home in Lower Brule. Burial was in the Hill Church Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Wagner. Peters Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Wilhelmena J. Patterson, affectionately known as “Mena or Beanz”, was born on March 15, 1979, to Wilmer Patterson Sr. and Maria Short Bear (Sexton). She made her journey to the spirit world on July 14, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and compassion.
Mena grew up in Lower Brule, where she spent most of her life. She was known for her warm personality, creative spirit, and deep love for her family and friends. Over the years, she held various jobs, but one that stood out to her was at Sung Maka Ska, where she poured her creativity into arts and crafts, especially making star quilts, something she was deeply proud of.
Mena also had a passion for cooking; her frybread was loved by many, and she always found joy in socializing, laughing, and being surrounded by family and friends. She was a loyal friend who loved deeply. To her, friends were like family, and her circle was wide and full of love.
For a time, Mena lived in Alaska, where she met Philip Brown. The two later moved to Missouri, where she helped care for his mother and built a life with him. In January 2019, they became engaged. Tragically, Philip passed away in 2020, and the heartbreak of losing her fiancé, along with the loss of her mother Maria and several siblings, weighed heavily on her heart.
Despite the hardships she faced, Mena continued to love deeply and give of herself. After returning home to Lower Brule and Fort Thompson, she stayed with her dear friend Celine Dion, helping care for her children and remaining a steady, nurturing presence in their lives. Mena lived a tough life, but she didn’t let it harden her; instead, she stayed kind, generous, and full of love. She was truly a good soul who will be forever missed.
Gratefully sharing in her life and memory are her beloved children: Tristan Johnson, LaTasha “Tashie” Patterson, Carsyn Patterson and her cherished grandbaby: Chosen Wilmer Lee Mato Patterson. She is also survived by her sisters: Teresa, Rolanda, Kenna, Amelia, and Felicia, and her brothers: Corwin and Dave; along with many nieces and nephews, extended family, and countless friends.
Wilhelmena was preceded in death by her parents, Wilmar and Maria; her siblings: Roland, Wilmer, George, and Celia; and several family members and dear friends who made their journey before her.
She will be remembered for her big heart, creative hands, laughter, love of family, and her strength through life’s storms.
