Wihenapa “Sunrise” Hart Sr., 46, of Wagner died Thursday, November 9, 2023 in his home in Wagner. Funeral services were held Monday, November 13 at YST South Housing Gym in Wagner. Burial was in the St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery in Marty. Peters Funeral Home in Wagner was in charge of arrangements.

Wihenapa “Sunrise” Hart Sr. entered Mother Earth Friday, May 20, 1977 in Yankton to proud parents Até Ronald Hart Sr. and Ina Frances Hart.

Sunrise attended school at Marty Indian School, Sisseton, and Heart of the Earth in Minneapolis, MN. Sunrise was a self-taught mechanic, chef, champion chess player, and family barber.

He worked as a line cook at Fort Randall Casino and various jobs in Minneapolis, MN. He made the best “gangster” soup and famous fry bread. Sunrise was involved once sold a book and bought a bicycle.

Sunrise leaves to mourn his brothers: Kini Hart of Superior, WI, Alcott Brant Jr. and Norman Brant of Wagner; sisters: Marie “Malana” Heart of Shakopee, MN, Frances Brant of St. Paul, MN, Rose Cano Solis (Darwin Sr.) of Oakdale, MN; children: Tatiana Hart, Wihenapa Hart Jr, Francisco Hart, Back Bear (Muck-a-Day Mukwa) Hart, Louie Hart, Aidan Hart, Laylecia and Kaoni Holiday; grandchildren: Warror and Zendaya; and significant other Angela White Horse.

Sunrise is preced în death by grandparents: William Hart, Dorothy Mattrious of the St. Croix Ojibewa Tribe and Francis Thunder Horse and Marie Heart Sargeant of Ihanktonwan Tribe; brothers: Ronald Hart Jr., Justin Hart, and Louie Hart. in cross country and basketball in high school. Sunrise and brother Kini ran cross country with Billy Mills in Minneapolis, MN.

“Sunfish” called by relatives and some friends had an outgoing personality. He could relate and carry on a conversation with everyone. He would always find a way to make you laugh. Expensive comic book collectables was a hobby, he
