The Wagner Red Raider varsity volleyball team put away the Platte/Geddes Black Panthers on Tuesday, September 4th. With the 25-11, 25-10, 25-20, Wagner moves to a 6-1 record. I believe our first contact, serving and passing, continue to be strengths of this team, and they are continuing to improve on other aspects of the game as well.

Outside hitters, Faith Tyler and Abby Brunsing combined for 22 kills, as each threw down 11. Junior middle blocker, Kayli Kocer, found her rhythm and put away 7 kills, while Maesa Dvorak recorded 3 kills, and 2 blocks. Paige Petry and Lizzie Tyler were even on the front line with 2 kills each. The only Red Raider with double-digit digs was Faith Tyler with 12. Three Wagner players served 5 aces apiece, Faith Tyler, Kirstyn Roth and Brunsing. Setters, Emilea Cimpl and Lizzie Tyler, ended the evening with 16 and 11 assists respectively.

The JV had a three-set thriller but was unable to get the win. Set scores were 18-25, 25-12, 10-15. Bella LeBeaux led the offense with 7 kills while three others put down 3 kills piece, Avari Bruguier, Dani Twiss, and Payton Mora. Defensively, Callie Frei scrapped for 7 digs, while Bruguier and Madi Knebel tallied 6 apiece. Seventh grade setter, Macy Koupal was aggressive behind the service line as she scored 12 points, including 6 aces, and she also dished out 10 assists.

During the C match, Wagner was down in the first set, but scrambled out of the hole, and won 25-20. The next two sets didn’t go in their favor and they lost both sets, 13-25, and 9-15. Middle hitters, Shona Kocer and Kya Kjeldgaard slammed down 6 and 5 kills, while Sydney Cournoyer contributed 3 more. Olivia Breen picked up 12 digs, and Cassidy Wilson finished with 12 assists. Kocer led behind the service line with 3 aces.

WAGNER VB SWEEP THE SPIKERS

Wagner found itself on top of an SESD match-up Thursday, September 6th, as they swept the Gregory Spikers at all three levels. The C team took the match 25-10, 27-25, while the JV won 25-21, 25-16. Between the varsity’s on-point passing, and aggressive serving, they made short order of the Spikers taking the match 25-11, 25-12, 25-15. The Red Raiders recorded a season high 18 aces in the varsity match.

Offensively, Kayli Kocer was a power at the net slamming down 9 kills. Abby Brunsing and Faith Tyler had 8 and 6 kills from the outside. Defensively at the net Maesa Dvorak and Lizzie Tyler put down 3 blocks each. In the back-court, Faith Tyler scrapped for 10 digs, and Lizzie Tyler picked up 6 more. The Tyler’s also led behind the service line with Lizzie scoring 16 points, 6 aces, and Faith 14 points, including 5 aces. Brunsing also scored double-digit points, 11 with 4 aces. Setters, Lizzie Tyler and Emilea Cimpl, dished out 17 and 11 assists. With the win, Wagner moves to 7-1.

Leading the JV squad on the front line was Avari Bruguier with 5 kills, and Bella LeBeaux tallying 4 more. LeBeaux also led the net defense with 2 blocks. Three Red Raiders picked up 6 digs apiece, Callie Frei, Dani Twiss, and Payton Mora. Macy Koupal scored 11 points and distributed 16 assists to her hitters.

Madi Knebel led the C team with 5 kills, while 3 more hitters put away 3 each, Kya Kjeldgaard, Shona Kocer and Sydney Cournoyer. Olivia Breen popped up 9 digs, and Mackenzie Roberts totaled 7 more. Roberts also led all servers with 3 aces, 8 points, while Cournoyer scored 7 points, with 3 aces. Cassidy Wilson ended the C match 10 assists.
