Funeral services for Mary Irwin will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 17, at the United Methodist Church in Wagner. Burial is in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, rural Dante. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Peters Funeral Home in Wagner.

Mary Jane (Havranek) Irwin was born September 29, 1947 in Sioux City, IA, the daughter of Joseph and Helen (Karolevitz) Havranek. She died under hospice care, surrounded by family, on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at the Good Samaritan Society in Wagner.

Mary was raised on a farm south of Ravinia. She attended Ravinia High School and graduated in 1965. She attended SDSU in Brookings for a semester. She then attended the Automation Institute in Omaha, NE. After her graduation from the Automation Institute she was employed as a key punch operator, machine Bookkeeper and loan processor at Northwestern Bell Employed Federal Credit Union in Omaha, NE. She moved to Sioux City, IA and was employed at the Zenith Corporation as a bookkeep until 1969. She returned to Wagner in 1971. She worked at several parttime jobs including: the Lunch Bucket, Jackie’s Video, Dakota Bowl, Spot Cafe, VFW and the Double D bar. In 1989, she went to work at Wagner Food Center and remained there until she retired in 2015 at the age of 67.

Mary will be remembered for her love for her kids and grandkids and all the joy they brought to her life. She enjoyed reading, needlepoint, cross stitch, Suduko puzzles, drinking coffee and playing card games with her family.

Thankful for having shared her life are her daughter Kristi (Tom) Zirpel of Parkston, Brad (Stacy) Irwin of Lake Andes, Kerry (Brian) Cuka of Wagner, and Renee (Darcy Feenstra) Dilts of Mission Hill; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; sister Florence McGuire of Jefferson; and her nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her infant son Michael, son Daniel, grandson Corey and two brothers: CJ “Jim” Havranek and Emmanuel Havranek.
