Her memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 28 at the United Methodist Church in Doland. Pastor Harold Loewen will officiate. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield, SD (www.hykefuneralhome.com).

Joyce R. Sheldon was born June 28, 1953 in Yankton, to Clarence A. Mace and Helena Felecia. Joyce spent her youth in Lake Andes and attended Marty Mission Indian School in Marty Mission.

Joyce received her Nurse Aide certification and worked in numerous nursing homes. She had a compassion and respect for the elderly. Joyce injured her shoulder in 1992 which made it impossible to continue this work which she missed dearly.

After her work as a nurse aide, she worked numerous jobs including casino surveillance, factory mold polishing, cleaning, direct support at SDDC, and convenient store cashier at the “One Stop” in Redfield and the “C Store” in Doland. She met many people through these jobs and considered them her friends.

Joyce had a love of nature and would constantly point out the sunset, animals and flowers that she saw and wanted to share with those around her. She loved all animals and had a special bond with them. She also had a green thumb and grew many plants in her home. In her spare time, Joyce liked to read, watch movies and play games.

Joyce is survived by her two sons: Shawn Sheldon and Michael Sheldon, both of Osage, IA. She is also survived by two grandsons: Dylan and Chayce Sheldon.

She is preceded in death by her mother and several other relatives.
