Funeral services for Jo Ellen Wormsbecher, 87, of Avon are Wednesday, January 28 at 10:30 a.m., at the Danzig Baptist Church, rural Avon. Burial is in the Danzig Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. Peters Funeral Chapel in Avon is in charge of arrangements. Jo Ellen Wormsbecher was born at her grandmother’s home in Running Water, the daughter of Joe and Pearl (DeRoos) DeGroot. She died Friday, January 23, 2026 at the Good Samaritan Society in Tyndall. Jo Ellen graduated from Springfield High School in 1957. She earned a Teaching Degree from Southern State College in Springfield. She briefly taught at a rural school near Springfield. She then taught in Clarkfield, MN in 1962-63. She was united in marriage to Elmer Wormsbecher on June 17, 1964 in Kingsburg. Together they farmed north of Avon. Jo Ellen was a homemaker and raised four sons. After the kids had grown, she then worked as a substitute teacher in area schools and worked at the Avon Public Library for several years. Jo Ellen was a member of the Danzig Baptist Church and the Danzig WMF. She was also an active 4-H leader for many years and was a member of the Bon Homme Abandoned Cemetery Association. Jo Ellen will be remembered for her love of crocheting/knitting, baking, gardening, puzzles, game shows, genealogy, reading and collecting Dutch collectables. Thank fu l for having shared her life are her four sons: Gary of Yankton, Dale and wife Lori, Lyle, and Scott all of Avon; granddaughters Lea and Katey of Sioux Falls; and brother Gary and wife Sandy DeGroot of Springfield. Jo Ellen was preceded in death by her husband Elmer, parents Joe and Pearl DeGroot, brother Roger DeGroot, and sister Sharon (Earl) Kosters.
