Funeral services for Harlan Horned Eagle, 63, of Lake Andes were Friday, February 28 at the White Swan Center. Burial was in the Cedar Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Wagner. PetersFuneral Home in Wagner was in charge of arrangements.

Harlan Wayne Horned Eagle Sr. was born on August 5,1956 at the Wagner IHS Hospital to Seth (Sr.) and Margaret (Rouillard) Horned Eagle. He journeyed home on February 22, 2020 in Rosebud.

Harlan grew up in Pine Ridge and in Wolf Point, MT before the family returned to Lake Andes. He attended elementary school in Ravinia and high school at St. Paul’s Mission in Marty, where he graduated in 1975.

Harlan and Malinda Joseph had three daughters: Christine, Heather and Anita before Harlan attended USD in Vermillion for a brief period. He then moved to Bismarck, ND and attended United Tribes Technical College. He was the only male LPN student in the first class of nursing at UTTC and graduated in 1978. It was in Bismarck that he met Nora and they were blessed with a son, Harlan Jr. Harlan worked as a LPN at hospitals in various places in both North Dakota and South Dakota.

Harlan was elected as the Treasurer of the Yankton Sioux Tribe in the late 1980’s and held this position for various times in the 1990’s and the early years of 2000. He most recently was employed at the Wagner Good Samaritan Center from which he retired in 2018.

Harlan is survived by his children: Christine of Sioux Falls, Heather of Sioux Falls, Anita of Wagner and Harlan Jr. of Bismarck, ND; his siblings: Sylvianne of Gallup, NM, Clyde and Ann of Horton, KS, Robert Guy of Lake Andes, Jean of Marty, Matt (Mabel) of Ft. Thompson, Mike of Lake Andes and Matilda (Stewart) of Marty; brother-in-law Ernie of Ravinia; sister-in-law Shirley and many other family, relatives and friends.

Waitingto welcome him home are his maternal grandparents: Rev. Cyril and Matilda (Estes) Rouillard; paternal grandparents: Rev. Alex and Lucy (Fine Voice Crow) Horned Eagle; his parents: Seth (Sr.) and Margaret Horned Eagle; siblings Seth Jr., Gordon Sr. Gerald, Deanna, Melvin, Ardyce, Adelle, Doug and Randy.
