Darlene Yellow Hawk

Darlene Yellow Hawk, 71, of Lake Andes died Saturday, July 24, 2021 at the Lake Andes Senior Living Center. Funeral services were Tuesday, July 27 at the Marty Community Center in Marty. Burial was in St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery in Marty. Peters Funeral Home in Wagner was in charge of arrangements.

Darlene was born in Rosebud in 1950 to Harlan Yellow Hawk and Cora No Moccasin. She was raised by Angeline and Rudy Runs Above.

Darlene married Thurman Cournoyer on February 20, 1970. Together they had seven children.

Darlene loved making star quilts and cooking “the best bread ever”. She had many grandchildren that she loved spending time with.

Darlene grew up very traditional and loved speaking her Native Lakota language. She was a very proud, loving mother and grandmother

Darlene (a.k.a. Mother Goose) will be missed dearly by all her family and friends.

Darlene is survived by her sisters Bertha Neck (Parmelee) and Lucinda No Moccasins (Parmelee); her children: Kenny, Thurman Jr., Wayne, Dewey, Lisa and Hazel Cournoyer; all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Angeline and Rudy Runs Above; her sisters Amy and Elsie; her brother Pat and her daughter Angeline Cournoyer.
