The Lady Raiders hosted the Mt. Vernon Plankinton Titans in a fight for the top spot in Region 5 in class A. The Titan’s would come to put up a fight from the start. Wagner would jump out to an early 4-0 lead but find themselves trailing 9-8 after the first period. Wagner’s offensive struggles would continue in the 2nd quarter as the Titans would increase their lead to 7 going into half 22-15. Wagner would come alive in the third out scoring the Titans 20-7 and hold a 6-point advantage. Wagner would increase it’s lead to as much as 12 only to find themselves up by 2 42-40 with :38 remaining in the game. After a timeout by MVP and the Raiders ball in the back court, Wagner would set up a special. Shalayne Nagel would receive a bomb from Emma Yost and convert a lay-up putting the Raiders up 44-40. Wagner would get a stop and the Titans would have to foul 3 times to put Wagner in the bonus. By the time that happened there were :19 left on the clock as Ashlyn and Macy Koupal would each knock down two free-throws apiece to seal the victory for the Raiders 48-40. Wagner shot 18-45 for 40% while the Titans were 13-42 for 31%. Wagner won the battle of the boards 32-20. Both teams committed 15 turnovers. The Raiders were 9-12 from the line while the Titans were 7-11. Emma Yost led Wagner with 17 points, 8 boards, 3 steals and 2 assists. Shalayne Nagel would follow that up with 16 points, 4 boards, 3 steals and 2 assists. Ashlyn Koupal was Q107.3 player of the game and had a huge third quarter scoring 7 of her nine points in a :40 span to help overcome the deficit. She also contributed 6 boards and 2 blocks. Macy Koupal added 5 points, 6 boards and dished out a team high 4 assists. Lydia Yost rounded out the scoring with 1 point, grabbed 8 boards, had 2 steals, and dished out 2 assists. “This was by far the best defensive pressure in the half court we have seen thus far. I thought MVP did a great job helping from the backside. We did a great job of adjusting in the second half and cutting to the basket to create one on one opportunities. Defensively, we only let 3 players score. Fox had an on night for them as she was knocking down shots in the first half. The second half we lost her a couple of times and left her for open looks. When guarded we did a really good job defensively on her. Controlling the glass was huge again as we out rebounded them by 12. We fought adversity which is good and now know what it feels like to come from behind and to win a close game.”

They would open with an 18-5 lead. Then take a 33-10 halftime lead. The third quarter would be a slow one as they would score only 7 to hold a 40-16 lead but finish strong in the 4th out scoring Scotland 15-2 and winning the game 55-18. Emma Yost would lead all scorers and post a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards. She would also dish out 3 assists and come away with 3 steals. Lydia Yost would add 10 off the bench. She would also dish out 2 assists and come away with 2 steals. Eve Zephier was back in action scoring 8 points, grabbed 3 boards, and dished out 2 assists. Macy Koupal and Shalayne Nagel would each chip in 7. Koupal would grab 7 boards and dish out 3 assists. Nagel would grab 4 boards, dish out 3 assists, and come away with 3 steals. Sydney Cournoyer would add 4 points off the bench, as well as Jessica Kocer. Ashlyn Koupal would also score 2 points, grab 6 boards, and dish out 2 assists. Wagner would shoot 22-52 for 42% while holding the Highlanders to just 16%, 5-32. Wagner would own the glass with a 38-17 rebounding advantage. Wagner would commit 9 turnovers compared to 17 from Scotland. Wagner would hit 5-8 from the line while Scotland would be 7-16. “Defensively another great team effort. We just limited them to contested shots and then did a great job controlling the glass. In the third quarter we didn’t play very good offense. We settled for one to two pass shots and didn’t get the ball moving. When we did move the ball we weren’t ready to shoot. In the 4th we found our rhythm again and played great team basketball just like the first half. “

Scotland kept the game close but Wagner held on for a 42-32 victory. Preston McFayded and Braxton Knudsen scored 10 points each, Joey Cournoyer added 9, Carter Cournoyer scored 5, Glenn Cournoyer 4, Ted Slaba and Parker Petry each scored 2.

The Raiders got off to a fast start and executed their offense well en route to a 9-5 lead after the first quarter. The shots weren’t falling in the second quarter and Scotland made a run to pull within 1 at the break by a score of 13-12. A back-and-forth third quarter saw a tied score of 21-21 heading into the final period. The Raiders had several good looks at the basket, but they just weren’t going in for them and Scotland pulled away with a final score of 23-28. The Raiders B team record drops to 1-6 on the season. Leading the way in scoring was Gabe Rouse with 6, Trasin Dilts with 5, AJ Kotab with 4 and Damien Redlightning, Kysin Cook, Paxton Kuhlman, and Jaxon End of Horn all added 2. Both Raider teams have a busy week ahead as they travel to Lake Andes on Tuesday and play Gregory at home on Thursday.

Scotland held a 36-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter. In the final period Wagner came storming back scoring 16 points and forcing the game into overtime. The Red Raiders had a 1 point lead with 9 second left, Scotland came down and hit a shot as time expired to win the game 56-55. Chris Nelson scored 18 points and had 3 steals for Wagner. Dustin Honomichl also scored 18 points and had 9 rebounds, Toby Zephier scored 13 points and had 4 assists, Matt Link, Camden Roth and Carter Cournoyer each scored 2 points.

The Red Raiders built on their lead in the second half and won the game 44-34. The score was tied 29-29 after 3 quarters, both teams offense picked it up in the final period but the Titans had a little more in the tank and won the game 52-47.

MVP played well in the second period erasing the deficit, leading 34-32 at half time. The Red Raiders played hard in the second half but MVP was too much for them, the Titans expanded their lead and won the game over Wagner 73-55. Dustin Honomichl scored a team high 24 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Toby Zephier added 11 points and had 4 steals, Matt Link added 6 points, Ted Slaba 5, Preston McFayden 4, Chris Nelson 3 and Glenn Cournoyer 2.
