This has been an exhausting year for moms. Last spring, we had no idea we would still be dealing with this pandemic a year later. It presented difficult decisions, such as in-person school or remote learning, how to work from home while caring for children, or how to pay the bills without work, when to let children visit their grandparents, what to do for birthdays and holidays. Regardless of the decision made, it seemed someone somewhere was judging our choice. But I want you to know, I see you every day doing the best you can.

Betsy and I just returned from a ten-day visit to our youngest daughter’s home in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (aka Los Cabos). Cabo is on the very tip of the thousand-milelong Baha Peninsula beneath California. The Sierra de la Laguna Mountains separate the Sea of Cortez from the Pacific Ocean, and other than what has been developed, the very dry terrain is desolate brush and cactus. The temperatures ranged from the low 80’s during the day to 70’s at night. The wind, except on the water, was negligible.

When I was a kid, my grandparents took me fishing at the Lake Norden spillway, a passage that allows water from Lake Norden to flow underneath Highway 28 and into lakes Mary, John, Albert and points beyond. I don’t recall being excited by the outing. Fishing had never appealed to me. My grandparents, who once took yearly fishing trips into Saskatchewan and caught their share of Northern pike and perch in the waters of Hamlin County, were no doubt trying to pique my interest in their shared pastime.

My grandmother was a lively, caring, wonderful woman, who remained very active late in her life. One spring day, after an unusual April blizzard, she stepped out of her apartment on her way to her weekly bridge game. While we South Dakotans are among the most fortunate people in the world, we often take things for granted without fully realizing just what we have. Such is the case with our turkey hunting. South Dakota is frequently recognized as the top state in the nation to hunt turkeys. Turkey hunters from around the country fly to hunt destinations while we have an hour’s drive at best.
