The Wagner Labor Day Committee is honored to present our 2023 Labor Day Parade Marshal, Sharon Haar. Sharon and her late husband Harris contributed so much to this community and their recognition is well-deserved. The following interview was recorded and written by Sharon’s son Milton; the Labor Day Committee would like to thank the entire Haar family for their support these last few months. Sharon will be quite busy over Labor Day weekend as she will be presiding over many of our great events culminating with the 123rd Annual Labor Day Parade; so please be sure to thank Sharon for her commitment to this community when you see her this coming Labor Day weekend.
Read moreThere are five members of the Wagner Community School fall golf team. The team includes sophomore Carter Smejkal, freshmen Avery Medicine Bear and Paxton Kuhlman and seventh graders Kason Jonas and Dakota Charging Eagle. Carter Smejkal will be relied upon in a leadership role because of his experience. They are coached by Chris Kuca who is in his second year of coaching. This is only the second year of fall golf, so they are still working on building a program. Last season the golf team ended the year with six golfers.
Read moreOn June 30th the Lake Andes Farmers Co-Op Lumber Yard closed its doors. On August 1st, it was purchased and became the Lake Andes Lumber Company LLC. There are over 29 investors in the Lake Andes Lumber Company. The investors are made up of mostly local people from Lake Andes and Wagner but even as far as Rapid City. The investors saw a need for a hardware and lumber supply store in Lake Andes and rallied together to purchase and reopen the store. They saw a need for their community and did not want to see another empty building on Main Street.

Read moreStegmeier is a Veteran of the Vietnam War. Merritt was drafted on December 28th, 1965, and assigned to the Army. Stegmeier spent his eight weeks of basic training at Fort Ord in CA. He was then sent to Fort Monmouth, NJ for sixteen weeks for his Advanced Individual Training (AIT). His AIT was in microwave/radio repair along with fifteen other soldiers. On August 15th, 1966, Merrit was sent to Vietnam. He deployed from Yakima, WA then to Oakland, CA where he was sent to Saigon, Vietnam.

They all seemed to agree with journalist Malcolm Gladwell, who said that it takes some talent, but more importantly, about 10,000 hours of practice to become good at anything. They each also said that writing has given them joy and humor, an understanding about life and a sense of meaning.
