American Legion Greer Post #11 held its monthly meeting on April 17th, with 25 Legion members and 4 SOL members in attendance. Also in attendance was Ellie Leines and family. Ellie is the daughter of Luci and Tracey Leines and is a 2nd grader. Ellie was awarded with a Good Deed/Youth Hero award by Legion Auxiliary. Chaplain Don Kotab then gave the invocation which was followed by a moment of silence for Arnold Horner and Sgt. Dennis B Morgan, who was a member of Co. A 153rd Bt. who was killed in combat 21 years ago today. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all followed by the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion. Vice Commander John Crisman, standing in for Commander Rados, then called the meeting to order.

Read moreWagner Communities That Care hosted a Rollin’ Into Summer Safely event on May 1. The purpose of the event was to promote helmet safety while using any type of wheels and to meet law enforcement. The event started during school with all 194 Wagner Community School students grades 2-4, receiving a free helmet. Each student was fitted for a helmet with help from the school’s Hope Squad members, law enforcement and Wagner CTC members. Students were given instruction on proper helmet fit, information on bike safety, hand signals and stickers to decorate their helmets. The after-school event provided students with a chance to win a free bike or scooter, take home a refurbished bike and gel ice pack, instruction on bike maintenance (how to air tires and put a bike chain on), have a snack, meet local law enforcement and drive through an obstacle course.
Read moreIt is no surprise that spring is a very busy season for all students, coaches, and teachers, especially those heavily involved in all of the activities AHS has to offer. There are a number of students currently playing softball, track, or golf, and a few students who are even participating in all three sports simultaneously! They somehow tackle all of these responsibilities while still maintaining their grades/doing their best to stay on top of their academics. We, at the Jolly Roger, would have loved to interview them for this article, but ironically, it is not easy to catch them actually in school!

Individually, Abby Gretschmann received a “Superior” rating in the Algebra II division. In other divisions, Kaeli Wallinga receiveda“Superior”rating, Lila Vanderlei and Carmindy Ferwerda received an “Outstanding” rating, and Aaden Kuchta earned Honorable Mention in the Pre-Calculus division. Congratulations to the Avon Pirate students for their outstanding hard work and problem solving through the competition.
