I am planning to go to Kentucky for a couple weeks in July. I am doing a volunteer mission trip with the Christian Appalachian Project (CAP). People from many denominations will be volunteering there. They do a variety of programs including home repair, early childhood education, hunger relief, and elderly services. I will be working in the kitchen, cooking three meals a day, and delivering bag lunches at noon to the construction crews. I will also be visiting older people in their homes, encouraging them, and also telling them of my faith in Christ. This area is one of the poorest in the United States. I have invited members of my church to donate SCHOOL SUPPLIES and/or SHOES for me to hand out there. I would also like to ask you to consider helping in that way also. Just give me a call and I can meet you in Avon (286-3404). A couple high school girls are getting some forms filled out to go out there with me. I feel this will be a wonderful experience for us and will open our eyes to help us realize how blessed we are.

Read moreMonday, June 7th was the kick off to the Avon Public Library’s Summer Reading Program. Forty-five children showed up for the event. Faith Vanden Hoek was the guest reader, reading Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen. The participants enjoyed a snack of an underwater scene they got to design on a graham cracker with frosting, goldfish, and candy fish sprinkles. Next, the kids started working on their Young Author’s workshop projects. These are cumulative projects that can be worked on in the library all summer. When finished, the pages will be sent to be published. Each child will receive their own hardcover creation. Five names were drawn for door prizes. Thank you to the following businesses and individuals who have donated prizes to our program: Beck Seeds (Scott and Julie Van Gerpen, Powers Furniture, Ron’s Market, Beth Namminga, and Kristi Hilzendegar.) Our next Summer Reading Program session will be June 21st at 12:30pm.

Veterans, Law Enforcement officers, Fire Fighters, EMS personnel…those who have served a higher calling to protect, defend and safeguard the lives of others bear a burden that those who have never done the job rarely understand. Alongside these professionals are the Gold Star families who have also paid the price for the higher calling of their loved ones.
