This Week in ROTARY NEWS
On Wednesday, October 17th, President Jerry Weber called the Wagner Club to order. Before continuing he made an announcementthatthiswasthelastmeeting Rotarian Glen Hofer would be attending. Jerry thanked him for his membership and his many years of service to the club. A round of applause was given by club members. We wish him well!
Rotarian Glen was also called upon to give the blessing which he did in his usual comforting way. He gave thanks for the club members, asked for a blessing upon the farmers as they begin to try to harvest their crops and blessed the food and the hands that prepared it.
Rotarian Laurie led the club in a rousing verse of “Smile” in Glens honor. This is one song that the members hardly need the songbook to sing well.
This day was what is known to the club members as “Steak Day”. Every quarter attendance total determine which attendance team has the most absences. That team buys the other team’s steaks as well as pay for their own! The Henke team was the recipient this time and the Frei team footed the bill! Kathe Henke made mention that this was the first time in two years that the team she was a member of did NOT have to buy the steaks.
Roger Wiltz drew the lucky ticket from the drawing for the second week in a row and received another chance to draw the Queen of Hearts but came up short with a 5 of Clubs.
Secretary-Treasurer Substitute Becky Brunsing announced that the Henke Team had 2 misses and a total of 5 for the new quarter and the Frei Team had 4 misses with a total of 7 for the new quarter. We collected $24 for the Queen drawing and the total is up to $55.00
Rotarian Becky announced that Linda Soukup has the program next week on the 24th. The District Governor will be in Wagner on the 31st and will be the program; Pat Breen has November 7th, Ken Cotton the 14th, and Laurie Kidd on the 21st of November.
Football winners were Adam Stedronsky sold by Joe Stedronsky and James Bechen sold by Amanda Bechen.
Steak Day traditionally has no formal program and there were no Senior WCS students attending. President Jerry asked Roger Wiltz, a former District Governor to give a short report on the annual District Governors meeting held recently. Roger announced that the finances and budget for District 5610 is in good shape. Membership however has fallen in the district since 1988-1989 from 1400 members to a present total of 1200. He noted that 25% of that total is made up of women.
The District had a record number of projects that were awarded grant money in the past year. He urged the members to think of a project in our community that would be worthy of applying for some of this grant money. Rotarian Kelsey Doom reminded everyone that to apply for the grant money you must first attend a session on grant writing that is given in Rapid City or Sioux Falls to all interested Rotarians.
Rotarian Roger also announced that unfortunately the Group Study Exchange program that was so popular for so many years has been discontinued as it was becoming a financial burden. There is a program called Friendship Exchange which is popular and is open for only one couple from a club to attend another club with accommodations for food and lodging secured.
President Jerry announced that there would be a short Board of Directors meeting following adjournment. All rose and addressed the flag with singing of My Country Tis of Thee.
