On Monday, June 13, Wagner hosted Mt. Vernon-Plankinton for some 14 and 16U action at Hennies Field. The 14U team went down by a score of 11-0. As the score would indicate, there is not much good to report from this game. Javian Pesicka started pitching for Wagner and got little help defensively as MVP would tally four unearned runs in the first frame. He would go on to pitch three innings giving up a total of seven runs, three being earned, on eight hits and a walk while striking out four.

Wagner did not collect a hit in this contest. Pesicka did reach base twice, both times via a hit-by-pitch. Paxton Kuhlman also took a hit by pitch.

As for the 16U game, one bad inning did the boys in as they would fall by a score of 7-5. Wagner held a 4-1 lead going into the fourth inning but would allow six runs in that frame, only one of which was earned. Corbin Carda started pitching and breezed through three innings. He started to tire in the fourth but could have gotten out of the inning with some defensive help. That didn’t happen, however, and his night on the mound ended after 3.1 innings. He would give up five runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits and three walks while striking out one. Carlin Hopkins then came on to finish the game as he went 3.2 innings giving up two unearned runs. He did a nice job of limiting the damage as he allowed four hits, walked three and struck out two.

Offensively for Wagner, Matt Link had the only multi-hit game, singling twice and scoring two runs. Carda had a hit, an RBI, and one run scored. Carter Cournoyer had a two RBI double. Colby Krcil singled and Joey Cournoyer knocked in one run with a groundout. Pesicka and Daniel Soukup would each score a run for Wagner.

On Wednesday, June 15, Wagner’s teeners would host Scotland on a beautiful evening at Hennies Field. The 14U team would take to the field first. Preston McFayden was the starting pitcher in this game and pitched two innings, giving up two unearned runs on one hit while walking two and striking out four. Malaki Segura then took the ball and lasted only 2/3 of an inning as wildness plagued his efforts. He allowed five runs, four of which were earned on only one hit. He also walked two, hit two, and struck out two batters. Brady Cournoyer then came on to get us out of the inning and he was helped by a caught stealing. Brady would pitch an inning and a third allowing one run on one hit while walking one, hitting one, and striking one out. Frank Soukup would finish things up and he would be the only one not to allow a run as he struck out two and hit one batter.

At the plate Wagner would only muster four hits on the night. They didn’t draw enough walks and would strike out too frequently as they would come up on the short end of an 8-4 score. Javian Pesicka, Trey Segura, Soukup, and McFayden would all collect one hit. Segura would drive in a run and score a run. Pesicka would score twice and Cournoyer would also plate one run for Wagner.

The 16Us would then take the field for the nightcap and this game would not last long as Wagner would hold on for a tight 2-1 victory. Ted Slaba got the ball for Wagner and was his usual efficient self as it took him 75 pitches to complete seven innings and earn the win. He had solid backing by the defense as they would only commit one error on the night while turning in a few defensive gems. Ted’s one run would be unearned, that running scoring on a dropped strike three pitch. He struck out six, walked none, and hit one.

Daniel Soukup would have what proved to be the key hit of the game as he had a two out bases loaded single in the bottom of the second to drive in Wagner’s two runs. The only other hits of the night for Wagner were by Matt Link, Carter Cournoyer, Joey Cournoyer, Hunter Loeffler, and Carlin Hopkins, all of them being singles. Loeffler and Joey Cournoyer would score the two runs.

This past weekend, June18-19, Wagner’s 14U Post 7319 Teener team traveled to Winner to battle the heat and wind as well as three other baseball teams in Winner’s annual tournament.

The first game was against the host team and the boys would hold on for a 10-9 victory. Javian Pesicka was the starting pitcher for Wagner. He would go three innings and give up seven runs with only one of those being earned. He allowed the runs on four hits and four walks while striking out seven. Frank Soukup would come on in relief to earn the win as he tossed two innings allowing two unearned runs on one hit and three walks while striking out four.

Wagner’s offense was led by Trey Segura who collected three hits, scored two runs and had an RBI. Pesicka, Brady Cournoyer, Kysin Cook, and Paxton Kuhlman would all get one hit with Pesicka driving in a run and Cournoyer scoring three times. Trasin Dilts, Preston McFayden, and Malaki Segura would all drive in a run.

In the second game of the day Wagner would run into a tough Mt. Vernon-Plankinton team for the second time this week and the result wasn’t any different as Wagner would fall by a count of 19-7.

Brady Cournoyer would take the ball and last 3.1 innings. He would give up 12 runs, seven of which were earned, on seven hits, five walks, and one hit batter. He would strike out one. Frank Soukup would then come on in relief getting only one out before the mercy rule. Frank gave up seven runs, six earned, on six hits and a hit batter.

At the plate Cournoyer and McFayden would get two hits with McFayden getting a triple and scoring two runs. Pesicka and Soukup each had a hit and an RBI. Cook and Trey Segura each had a hit with Cook’s being a double.

Gregory would be the opponent in the final game of the tournament. It was another high scoring affair and luckily we were able to keep Gregory out of field goal range in the last inning to secure a 17-14 victory.

McFayden would get through three innings. He would give up 12 runs, six of which were earned, on nine hits and eight walks while striking out four. Malaki Segura came on to pitch the 4th inning, which was also the final inning due to time constraints, and he gave up two earned runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one.

Trasin Dilts collected two hits for Wagner, one being a two-out bases loaded double and the other and RBI single. Pesicka, Soukup, McFayden, and Trey and Malaki Segura each had one hit. Pesicka would score four runs and Soukup three. Everyone had either a hit or a run scored in this game.

Despite the fact that these weren’t the cleanest of baseball games, I will say these boys battled as we only brought nine to play three games in not the most pleasant of conditions. Hats off to our pitchers and catchers with special attention going to Malaki Segura who caught all but one inning and pitched the other.
