On Monday, June 6, Wagner’s two teener teams played host to Tyndall and would come away splitting the two games.
Preston McFayden was the starting pitcher for Wagner as he tossed five innings. He would give up three runs, one of which was earned, on three hits and six walks while striking out two.
Unfortunately, Wagner was only able to muster up one run on three hits as they would go down in defeat by a 3-1 score. Trasin Dilts, Trey Segura, and Ky Arpan each had a single for Wagner with Segura collecting the RBI. Kobe Drapeau would score Wagner’s lone run.
Wagner did play well defensively in this contest highlighted by a nice catch of a line drive in left field by Paxton Kuhlman. Drapeau and Javian Pesicka combined for five putouts/assists while Dilts played a solid first base with eight putouts.
The 16U team got off to a slow start as they trailed 1-0 after three innings. However, they would use six hits and four walks to score seven runs in the 4th inning and break the game open as they went on to win by 9-1 score.
Wagner would collect eight hits on the night, all of them singles. Carter Cournoyer was the only player with multiple hits as he collected two and drove in one run. Matt Link, Carlin Hopkins, and Javian Pesicka would each have a hit and an RBI. Colby Krcil knocked in two runs with his hit. Joey Cournoyer and Ted Slaba also added one hit apiece.
Carter Cournoyer would do all the work on the mound for Wagner as he got the complete game victory. He gave up one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out 12.
On Wednesday, June 8, Wagner played host to Wessington Springs for two teener games. The 14U team would get the evening started with Frank Soukup on the mound. He would do a solid job, giving up two earned runs in four innings pitched. Those two runs were scored on three hits. He had good control this night as he didn’t walk a batter while striking out four.
Javian Pesicka would come in to pitch the fifth and final inning. The first batter would reach on a single. Javian would then settle in and strike out the next two batters. The fourth batter of the inning would reach via an error, thus putting the tying run on second base. The next batter would hit a ground ball to third base where Kysin Cook would calmly glove it and throw a strike to first baseman Kobe Drapeau, securing the 14Us 4-2 victory.
Pesicka would lead Wagner’s offense as he collected two hits, scored two runs, and drove in one run. Drapeau would have the only other hit for Wagner as he would knock in one run as well. Soukup would walk twice and score a run while Preston McFayden drew a walk and scored a run.
Ted Slaba would get the nod for his first start on the mound in the 16U game. It took him 48 pitches to complete four innings of work. He would give up no runs on three hits while striking out four and walking none. Joey Cournoyer would pitch the fifth inning and it would also be scoreless as he would give up one hit and strike out one. This would be Joey’s only inning pitched as Wagner would triumph by a count of 10-0 ending the game by way of the mercy rule.
Joey and Hunter Loeffler would be the catalysts offensively as they each would collect two hits and drive in two runs. Joey would score two runs while Hunter scored once. Matt Link and Carlin Hopkins each had a hit and a run scored while Carter Cournoyer had one hit, that being a double, and two runs scored. Corbin Carda would reach base four times with two walks and two hit-by-pitches and score two runs. Slaba would score one run after reaching on an error. Brady Cournoyer drove in a run with a walk in his lone plate appearance. Daniel Soukup would also draw two of Wagner’s ten walks on the night.
Both teams played well defensively. Our pitching did an outstanding job of throwing strikes as neither team issued a free pass the entire night. I’m not sure that has ever happened before. Offensively the 16U team did what they needed to do, taking the walks when given and getting some timely hits. The 14U team needs to be more aggressive at the plate, particularly with two strikes, and I think their offense would improve.
On Friday, June 10, Wagner’s teeners for the fourth time this week played the host, this time to Alexandria. The 14U team would come away with a 10-4 win. Brady Cournoyer would get the win on the mound as he tossed four innings giving up four runs, two of which were earned, on three hits, four walks and a hit batter while striking out four. Javian Pesicka would toss a scoreless fifth inning to close things out.
At the plate Wagner was led by Cournoyer who had two hits and an RBI. Frank Soukup would double, score two runs and drive in one. Trey Segura would single and drive in a run on the night. Pesicka would single and score one run. Kobe Drapeau and Ky Arpan would each drive in a run while Preston McFayden, Paxton Kuhlman, Malaki Segura, and Drapeau would all score one run.
The 16U game had their first clunker of a game as they went down by a score of 11-1. The pitching quartet of Daniel Soukup, Corbin Carda, Carlin Hopkins, and Preston McFayden tried their best, but free passes and not the greatest defensive support were tough to overcome as Wagner gave up only five hits but issued 11 walks and hit one batter.
They didn’t do much at the plate to help themselves either as Wagner only collected two hits, one each by Corbin Carda and Ted Slaba, with Slaba collecting and RBI.
Wagner’s 16U teener team participated in Winner’s tournament on June 11 and 12. In the first game they would lose a close 5-4 contest to a tough Gregory team. Matt Link was the starting pitcher. He would throw five innings. He gave up five runs, all of which were earned, on five hits while walking two, hitting three, and striking out four. Joey Cournoyer would pitch one inning. He gave up one hit and struck out two.
Wagner was led at the plate by Hunter Loeffler who had two hits, one of which was a double. He would also score two of the four Wagner runs. Link, Colby Krcil, and Daniel Soukup each had a hit and an RBI. Carter Cournoyer would have the only other hit for Wagner in this game.
Stanley County was the next opponent for Wagner and they weren’t quite on the same level as Gregory as Wagner was able to come away with an 18-3 victory. Ted Slaba was the starter in this one and he pitched all three innings. Only one of the three runs allowed was earned. He gave up six hits but walked no one and struck out one.
Offensively, Wagner would collect nine hits and 11 walks to breeze to the win. Krcil had the big game as he would collect three hits and four RBI to pace Wagner. Slaba and Loeffler would each have a hit and two RBI. Javian Pesicka, Corbin Carda, and Carter Cournoyer each had a hit and an RBI. Carlin Hopkins had the other hit for Wagner.
The final game of this tournament would take place on Sunday, June 12, and pit Wagner against the host team, Winner. Carter Cournoyer would get the ball to start the game. While he didn’t pitch poorly, he wasn’t exactly efficient as it took him 94 pitches to complete 3 2/3 innings as he gave up five earned runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out seven. Brother Joey would then come on to pitch the final 2 1/3 innings. Joey gave up three earned runs on five hits while walking none and striking out five.
Wagner had the lead by a 4-1 count going into the bottom of the 4th inning when Winner had big rally, scoring six runs after two were out to take a 7-4 lead. The boys were not to be outdone, however, as they sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the 5th and scored 10 runs to take a commanding lead and eventually win the game by a 15-8 score.
The top four batters in the lineup, Matt Link, Corbin Carda, Ted Slaba, and Carter Cournoyer combined to go 13 for 16 with seven RBI and 11 runs scored. Link had two doubles. Carda, who was 4 for 4, had a double and a triple. Cournoyer had a triple amongst his three hits while Slaba had three singles. Joey Cournoyer and Colby Krcil each had a hit and two RBI.
After this tournament the 16U team’s record now stands at 6-2.
