The Avon Pirates were back in action last week, hosting Irene/Wakonda on December 30 before hitting the road to face Wagner on January 3, but came up short in both contests. On December 30, the Pirates hosted Irene/Wakonda and suffered a 48–74 loss. Avon was led in scoring by Zander Fathke and Al’Shamon Gunter, who each finished with 12 points. Grayson Ratzlaff added 8 points, while Cale Cooper chipped in 6. Gunter also pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Pirates on the boards. Cooper dished out 5 assists and Ratzlaff added 2, while Ratzlaff and Fathke each recorded 2 steals on the night. As a team, Avon shot 29 percent from the field, connecting on 15 of 51 attempts. The Pirates struggled from long range, hitting just 1 of 11 three-point shots for 9 percent. Avon was 14 of 40 on twopoint attempts for 35 percent and finished 17 of 34 from the free-throw line.
