It was a cold, blustery, and windy day last Thursday as the TDA Knight Hawks came to town to take on the Lady Raiders.
The opening quarter was a slow start for Wagner, as the teams were tied 7–7 midway through the period. The Lady Raiders closed the frame on an 8–0 run to take a 15–7 lead after one.
Wagner found its rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring the Knight Hawks 22–7 to build a commanding 37–14 halftime advantage. The Raiders continued their strong play in the second half, outscoring TDA 27–20 to secure a 64–34 victory.
Ashlyn Koupal once again turned in a monster performance, recording a double-double with 29 points and 16 rebounds to go along with seven assists, five blocks, and three steals. Braxton Nedved also reached double figures with 12 points while adding three rebounds and two assists. Hannah Holzbauer chipped in six points and six rebounds.
Mateya Bruguier, Hayden Knudsen, and Ravyn Medricky each scored four points. Bruguier added three rebounds and four assists, while Knudsen and Medricky each pulled down two boards. TyShay Medicine Bear finished with three points, and Peytyn Wiechmann rounded out the scoring with two.
Wagner shot 24-of-52 from the field for 46 percent, while TDA finished 11-of-40 for 28 percent. The Lady Raiders controlled the boards with a 37–20 rebounding advantage. Both teams committed 12 turnovers. Wagner went 9-of-13 from the free-throw line, while the Knight Hawks finished 13-of-20.
“We did a lot better in transition tonight than in our opener last Tuesday,” the coach said. “We pushed the ball up the floor and ran wide, which gave us good looks. Defensively, we let their posts get too deep in the paint at times, but when we pressured, we did a really good job of speeding up the game. Our rebounding was strong on both ends of the floor.”
In junior varsity action, the Lady Raiders bounced back with a 45–32 victory. TyShay Medicine Bear led all scorers with 12 points. Clarah Soukup followed with eight points, while Peytyn Wiechmann added seven. Valencia Big Bear and Olivia Podzimek each finished with five points. Raeyon Fool Bull, Camry Link, Aryonni Picotte, and Teagan Langdeaux rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.
