The Avon Pirates boys basketball team was on the road last week and faced a pair of tough opponents, falling in both contests. Avon boys first traveled to Alcester/Hudson where the Pirates suffered a 52-68 loss. Zander Fathke led Avon in scoring with 15 points, while Al’Shamon Gunter added 13. Gunter also posted a doubledouble effort with 10 rebounds, and Fathke pulled down seven. Cale Cooper chipped in six rebounds, while Dominic Doom recorded two assists. Defensively, Fathke was active with nine steals, and Cooper added three. The Pirates struggled shooting the ball, finishing at 32 percent from the field after making 20 of 63 attempts. Avon connected on just 2 of 16 shots from threepoint range for 12 percent and went 10 of 17 from the free-throw line for 59 percent. Avon committed 19 turnovers in the loss.
The Pirates next faced a strong Ethan squad and came up short, falling 39-58. Fathke again led the scoring effort with 16 points to go along with one rebound, one assist and one steal. Dominic Doom added eight points, two rebounds and three steals. Gunter had a strong presence inside with six points, 14 rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Cale Cooper finished with six points and four rebounds, while Grayson Ratzlaff added two points, three rebounds and one assist. Mason Jolley chipped in one point and one rebound, and Brenson Ratzlaff contributed two rebounds and three assists.
