The Wagner Rotary Club met for its weekly meeting on Wednesday, July 24th and were served a deliciousmealbyGeriMcAdargahand Margaret Mach. These two ladies turn out such wonderful meals plus cold beverages, coffee, and a different dessert each week. The club is very appreciative of their efforts to nourish us.
Pastor/Rotarian Laurie Kidd offered up a prayer of thanks for all the blessings we enjoy and asked that we may continue to share our blessings as Rotarians with our Wagner Community.
Rotarian Dave Isebrand gave a Membership Minute based on a report from Rotary.org about women in Rotary. Women from four different Rotary Clubs in Alpharetta, Johns Creek, North Fulton, and Roswell Georgia meet quarterly at a social gathering and work together and collaborate on events, service projects, and fund-raisers. The women report on the projects that are doing the most good for their communities and this gives them the opportunity to invite other women to Rotary. Almost half of the local clubs have women serving as presidents, and this gives them time to think about how they can give back to their communities.
While Rotary once had a reputation as an older man’s club women were not admitted as members under Rotary Internationals constitution until 1989; that’s simply not true anymore. Gender doesn’t seem to play a part in Rotary clubs at all anymore and certainly does not prohibit women from doing anything.
All Rotary clubs meet on different days and at different times, so these women make time for a special meeting for all women to get together and know each other better.
Laurie picked out It’s a Grand Old Flag for our regular song and Sing Out a Song of Rotary for our Rotary song for the day. Laurie is a very talented piano player and makes learning new songs fun for the club.
Joe Stedronsky was able to have a chance at drawing the Queen of Hearts but once again failed and only drew the 10 of Diamonds. $21 was collected from the members bringing the total of the pot to $776.00.
Patty Frei reported that Laurie Kidd’s attendance team had 4 misses and a total of 9 misses so far; and Bill Heerman’s team had only 2 misses today and a total of 7 misses.
Rotarian Francis Doom was called to the front to receive a special award of a Paul Harris Fellowship Pin +One.
Program Chairman for the day was Jeff Doom and he introduced Wagner’s new Superintendent of WCS Mr. Shad Storley. Shad thanked Jeff for inviting him to the meeting and commented that this was his third meeting with community members.
The first thing Mr. Storley explained was that No, he is not from the wrestling Storley family. Logan Storley is famous in South Dakota wrestling circles and his father Larry and Shad are second cousins. Shad’s family has always been more involved in basketball; however, the two Storley families lived on farms close to each other and helped each other out when needed.
Shad’s family was located at Roslyn, and his father ran a dairy farm. Shad stated he was very happy when his father sold the cows when Shad was 16. His mother was a schoolteacher. He has one brother and two sisters, all of whom are married. His parents are now deceased, and all his family is still in the Roslyn area, but he is the sibling who is now four hours away.
Shad and his wife Missy have two children, Conner and Morgan, both educated at SDSU and are in Mesa, Arizona and Loveland, Colorado respectively. Shad’s wife is going to be teaching close by at Lake Andes offering her talents half time for Music and half time for English.
Shad received his education at NSU. He has taught at Britton and spent one year in Wagner many years ago. He spent 7 years as an elementary principal and then became a High School Principal at Redfield, before interviewing for the job at Wagner and being hired. He had been involved in a 125,000 square foot new school at Redfield recently and will be missing out on seeing how it all unfolds.
He is happy about receiving the position as Superintendent at Wagner and is not afraid of change. “Never say Never” he commented. He is enjoying meeting and greeting people in the Wagner Community. He is getting comfortable with the changes he has made and looks forward to serving the Wagner school system.
He was asked about staffing and stated that they have all the staff hired at this point. There were five Paraprofessional spots open, but they have filled four and have only one position left. There is a head wrestling position open with Robert Kokesh leaving and the secretarial position in the high school will need to be filled.
Welcome to the Wagner Community Shad Storley! The club adjourned in its usual fashion.
